Does this have any implications for polyinstantiated tmp directories? As far as I can see, it should cause no problems as pam_namespace has an option for tmpfs tmp directories. But I thought it worth asking.

I don't see how. Since polycinstantiated tmp dirs are just being mounted over /tmp. Either as tmpfs or a physical directory, or a subdir of /tmp
