IMHO, a generic name has no business to be in the Name field, that's what GenericName is for. And I definitely know there are other people agreeing with me on that (Rex Dieter, for example).
So the two of you simply decided that it would be better for everybody if the menu item changed from the (somewhat cryptic, but informative) "IRC" to the totally meaningless "X-Chat" ?

I'd appreciate some enforcement of the democratically-voted packaging guidelines, which explicitly say "Installed .desktop files MUST follow the [desktop-entry-spec], paying particular attention to validating correct usage of Name, GenericName, [Categories], [StartupNotify] entries.", from FeSCo!
Please don't bring forms of government into this discussion, thats not leading anywhere. In particular if the people you cite in support of your change are the same that voted this particular wording in the packaging guidelines...
