Cobbler 2.2 has been tagged and released, with RPMS built and available in EPEL-testing now. This release incorporates a ton of new features:
* Import modules, which allowed easy integration of... * Ubuntu and Debian support again! * Better support for SuSE * Support for FreeBSD * Support for ESX 4+/ESXi * Integration with the python TFTP server pytftpd * "fetchable files" and "boot files" support for distros that need to get more files from the TFTP server * Faster sync using link cache * Support for EFI grub booting * Support for bridged interfaces * WSGI instead of mod_python for the web interface. * Lots of Web UI improvements * A lot more I'm sure I missed when going through the change log
Bugfixes:
* Seriously way too many to list individually. Read the change log, there were almost 1000 commits since the last release!
This will also start the new development period, in which we will target a major release every 6 months. That means we should release 2.4 in April of 2012, with periodic updates to 2.2.x monthly for bug fixes. February 6th of 2012 will mark the end of the development period for 2.4, after which only bug fixes will be applied to the master branch until 2.4 is released.
Thanks and enjoy!

This is really nice, thanks!
Is anyone willing to document the current stable release version on the main page of the wiki? And what about 2.0.x, will there be any bugfix releases or is it unmaintained as of now? I think some clarification would be very useful for users.

Standard practice is 2.0.x will receive bugfixes and security updates only - no new features, and 1.6.x should only get critical security patches now. We really need to organize the branches better, which is something I'd like to focus on next.
Not sure if many people have seen this, but I think it's a great model, and one I'd like to look at adopting for cobbler:
http://nvie.com/posts/a-successful-git-branching-model/
The major change here is that origin/master would be the stable branch, instead of dev like it is now. We'd create a new branch called devel which (following our even/odd model) would be 2.3.x. We already create release branches, so that wouldn't change (I've created release22 locally on my machine already).
Just a thought, if people hate it we don't have to do it, I just thought it might make keeping track of things easier.

Congratulations on getting this release out! Everyone out there using Cobbler is going to benefit from all the hard work that went into this stuff.
Hi there,
I'm banging my head against this and I'm sure it worked fine like this for me previously, but maybe not.
I'm using Cobbler 2.0.11 (I have also recreated this in 2.2.1).
I have enabled the authz_ownership module and populated the /etc/cobbler/users.conf file as follows:
<snip>
[agroup] myuser = ""
[admins] admin = "" cobbler = ""
</snip>
I log into the web GUI as myuser, then when I attempt to create a system record, when I press save I get:
<Fault 1: "cobbler.cexceptions.CX:'authorization failure for user myuser
I've attached the events from /var/log/cobbler/cobbler.log that are generated.
If I try and edit a system record that does not have an owner, it lets me save it just fine, as expected.
I've been looking at https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/AuthorizationWithOwnership but suspect it's very old now. It makes reference to an ownership module test script tests/tests.py but I can't see that anywhere.
What am I missing?
Thanks!
Paul Urwin

I believe this is by design. Users that aren't in the admin group essentially only have read-only access. You'll need to put the users under [admin] if you want them to be able to edit/create things, otherwise we'd have to come up with some kind of permission system (maybe something to consider).
Thanks James,
On the wiki page at http://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/AuthorizationWithOwnership it states:
<quote> Anyone who is in users.conf with this policy can create new cobbler objects of any type -- the WebUI will fill in the default ownership of the object to the name of the user who created them, so that users don't accidentally lock themselves out from the ability to edit objects they create -- that would certainly bug admins too much. </quote>
...which is why I'm confused. Certainly the behavior I am seeing suggests only admins can create system records, but the above statement contradicts that?
Paul
