Looks like I've had 'better' luck.
My experience is that on my laptop the KMS stuff appears to be
sensitive to the particulars of the monitor: I connect my X200 laptop
to 2 different monitors, one works fine "out of the box" (with KMS,
gdm/gnome, compiz), while the other doesn't.
For the one that doesn't, booting with "nomodeset" makes gdm/gnome
work for me, and booting with "nomodeset nopat" seems to make
gdm/gnome and compiz work for me. At least up to compiz-0.7.8-14.
Have you tried that?
