Forgive my ignorance, but why should I care about 'virtual

I thought 'virtual size' simply allowed the 'physical screen' to
scroll around
on the 'virtual screen'. Or does it mean that I need a 'really big'
virtual
screen that has two physical screens consuming parts of that 'virtual
screen'?
Yes. If you want two 1024x768 screens side by side, you have to set:
Virtual 2048 768
in xorg.conf , at present, as the Intel driver isn't yet able to do this
automatically.
