Doesn't matter what I do: trying to login or just sitting there....
I did manage once to 'cntl-alt-F1' and login once before it froze, but
I only got a couple of seconds before that froze too. After staring
at frozen screen for a minute or two, I got an "oom" dump (took a
picture of screen). Booting up in runlevel 3 and issuing 'startx' does

Turns out this issue is a problem with the preload package, not gdm
(sorry gdm!). Sometthing was causing preload to spawn a never ending
number of spawned processes that eventually consumed all resources.
I removed the preload package and this issue went away.
