Okay, I tried that. Now I get an error of:
No dep file found for kernel 2.4.22-1.2110.nptl
In the /boot directory I have the same set of files that exist on
*another* machine which I have, *except* for the missing .img file. Any
additional advice or help would be appreciated.

Make one yourself:
# mkinitrd /boot/ initrd-2.4.22-1.2110.nptl.img 2.4.22-1.2110.nptl
will create the inird file.
