I did it using apt, taking almost exactly the same steps that you did.
Ie. changed the sources to point to fedora core 1, and then apt-get
update && apt-get dist-upgrade.
Afterwards install fedora-release, fedora-logos, rpmdb-fedora, and rhgb.
That seems to have given me a nice fedora core 1 system.

Mads, did you do the dist-upgrade over the net (i.e. to a repo that
wasn't local)? It's not quite clear from your email. I want success
stories for that specific case because then in the FAQ that can be added
to as options for people with not-so-fast net connections.
