If I set the default runlevel in /etc/inittab to 3, then I can boot
Rawhide and end up with a normal text login prompt, and switch between
VTs at will. However, startx results in a permanent black screen again,
with no change even if I try to switch to a VT. The only indication of
responsiveness is that the ACPI shutdown initiated from VB works
normally. At least this way I don't have to use rescue mode to apply
updates.

which is the driver that your system uses??
Did you apply any update to the graphical server recently???
Did you file a bug in bugzilla with all required informations about
hardware and Xorg.log files???
