/etc/sysconfig/desktop should contain:
DISPLAYMANAGER=X
where:
X = "KDM" (kde)
X = "GNOME" (gdm)
X = "XDM" (xdm)
X = "WDM" (lord knows)
There may be others but those are the only ones listed in my /etc/X11/prefdm
