I did an upgrade path: FC3rc3->FC3Rc5 via yum updates. Then yum went
quiet. I then did a upgrade to FC3 final via ISO CDROMs. Yum is still
pointing at a development repo and I haven't had time to change it. I
did rpm -e yum and re install it, but it didn't touch the repos.

the repos aren't pointing anywhere meaningful? Where did you get the yum
package? The yum package (in combination with fedora-release) that comes
with fc3 has working configuration files.
