Make sure your bios isn't set to emulate the sata as IDE. Some bioses
ship this way to make it easier to install older Windows, but Linux has
no need for this.

BTW, the option in the bios isn't obvious, but under SATA it had a choice of
IDE, AHCI, and (I forget the other choice). Set to AHCI and now everything
works great!
