New alternative proven testers page draft
by Adam Williamson
Hi, everyone.
So, here's my alternative draft for a combined proven testers page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Adamwill/Draft_proventesters
It's basically the existing Proven_testers page (which is mostly Aaron's
work), with instructions for joining the group and details on the mentor
process added. I adapted the joining instructions from the existing
JoinProvenTesters page by Adam Miller, and wrote the mentoring stuff
myself.
I edited a few things in Aaron's section but nothing really major, just
one passive->active voice change and changing a link to point to the
fedora easy karma tool's wiki page rather than its pkgdb page (I think
this is more useful as it provides actual info on how to use the tool),
plus a bit more extra signposting of 'go read this page for instructions
now'. Also I added an explicit section called 'Positive feedback' to the
feedback procedures section, to make it clearer that, in general, we'd
expect to file positive feedback and the scenarios where you *don't* are
exceptions.
I tried to keep it short and in the spirit of 'here's what you should
do' rather than 'here's a high-level abstract discussion of the concepts
behind the process'.
Rotten vegetables welcome!

Musicians' Guide in Development; Testing Needed!
by Christopher Antila
Hello:
The Docs SIG is working on a guide for some of Fedora's music and audio
software, to be released with Fedora 14. The Musicians' Guide is being
written primarily by me, as part of the Fedora Summer Coding program.
Some of the first drafts are complete, with others being added regularly.
I would greatly appreciate the help of all willing parties, to read the
documents, establish and ensure consistency, and check for grammar. You
are even invited to use the documents to learn the software, if you wish
- all programs contain a tutorial where concepts are explained in the
context of producing a useful sound file.
The following web page will be updated regularly, as new material for
testing is written.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Crantila/FSC/Testing
All comments and any assistance are appreciated.
Regards,
Christopher.

flash player 64bit?
by Rob Healey
Greetings:
Is there anything that can be used as a substitute for the flash player
since Adobe refuses and alienates 64bit users?
They either expect us to use i386 software for my 64bit!
Sincerely yours,

In the case of an IWB, I'd always have two pointer devices - my mouse
and the IWB pointer device. For me, it's really about making sure that
the IWB pointer is actually useful.

And here's the twist. Because most IWBs are a screen/pointer device
with the 'desktop' projected onto the screen, there's no guarantee that
the area shown is actually rectangular. Sadly, the people who setup
these devices don't care much about getting things right, but I've seen
screens that have irregular shaped projections on the screen.
If the IWB pointer device is to allow you to click specific buttons or
simply show the pointer where you've touched the screen, then it will be
necessary to calculate where you're touching the device based on a four
sided area that's not a rectangle. (Imagine a projection that's not
square and the both the horizontal and vertical keystones are not
correct either.)
What you guys are doing is way outside my league (I'm a simple perl
coder) but hopefully what I can do to help is supply you with the real
world examples that need to be addressed to make this truly useful.
Sadly IWBs aren't as neat and tidy as a flat panel display and a wacom
style pointer device (where everything is nice a square).

I appreciate that this will take time, but if I can help with testing
then I'm more than happy to do what I can. With minimal assistance I
can usually be fairly useful.
Oh, should I file bug reports for this stuff in redhat's bugzilla, or
would that be pointless?

64bit flash
by Rob Healey
Good morning!
It looks like I sparked a very big topic here...
I agree with so many of you out there that are upset or mad that there is
not 64bit version of flash! I would love to see something, anything, come
down from Adobe regarding this issue!
I also hate the idea of having to install 65 packages from i386 land just to
get and use Flaqsh. I know that some of you have stated that it is no big
deal to install them, but I do not want to have to install so many packages
that are already on my system in x86_64 format!
If Adobe is re-working the entoire flash-plugin, then at least in the
interim, release a noarch release until you are ready to release an alpha
release...
Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

Qt library to start applications only once per user

Update Information:
For some applications it is useful or even critical that they are started only
once by any user. Future attempts to start the application should activate any
already running instance, and possibly perform requested actions, e.g. loading a
file, in that instance. The QtSingleApplication class provides an interface
to detect a running instance, and to send command strings to that instance.
For console (non-GUI) applications, the QtSingleCoreApplication variant is
provided, which avoids dependency on QtGui.

qtsingleapplication-2.6.1-1.fc13 (FEDORA-2010-10927)
Qt library to start applications only once per user
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
For some applications it is useful or even critical that they are started only
once by any user. Future attempts to start the application should activate any
already running instance, and possibly perform requested actions, e.g. loading a
file, in that instance. The QtSingleApplication class provides an interface
to detect a running instance, and to send command strings to that instance.
For console (non-GUI) applications, the QtSingleCoreApplication variant is
provided, which avoids dependency on QtGui.

Re: flash player 64bit?
by Jonathan Kamens
I wasn't being snarky, I was being pragmatic.
You're absolutely right that a triager should have looked at the bug in bugzilla, tried to reproduce it, and comment on the results. I can't comment on why that didn't happen. What I was commenting on was the fact that when a bug sits untouched for whatever reason, the single best way to get it unstuck is for the people who care about it to provide more information.
The "most popular bugs" page reflects how many duplicate bugs have been filed on any particular issue. We most certainly do consider that as a factor when determining which bugs to work on. Would you rather have limited resources devoted to the firefox crash bugs which has been reported hundreds of times, or to the Flash bug reported by only a few people, none of whom has indicated when reporting the issue that they actually followed the documented instructions for deploying it?
And I didn't post details in the ticket because I and others posted them here, and you are active here, and I knew that you would follow up on the issue, and my time is limited. I could have decided not to contribute any help at all here or in the ticket; would that have been preferable?
