Anything New on nVidia?
by Christopher A Williams
With the delays in F9 and X, I was wondering if there was anything new
on updated nVidia drivers. I frankly got lost trying to peruse
nvnews.net and with my job load lately, haven't had much time anyway.
Can anyone in the know give an update? I'm hopeful we'll see something
shortly after F9 releases in a few days...
Cheers,
Chris

rawhide (9-RC1) install report - two bugs
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
Complete install of rawhide-20080510 (9-RC1) reveals two bugs:
1) netfs occurs before NetworkManager, so NFS filesystems don't get
mounted: BZ# 445966
2) system hangs on diabling quotas during shutdown
BZ# 445961
Still can't make askmethod or method= work when stage2= is present.
Otherwise things are working after workarounds are done. Specifically,
NetworkManager is properly handling the wired ethernet, and SELinux is
not getting in the way of normal operation.

NEEDINFO-A-THON Bug Triage Opportunity 2008-05-09
by John Poelstra
Here is another bug triage opportunity!
Right now there are approximately 208 bugs in NEEDINFO for 'rawhide'.
http://tinyurl.com/6559fw
The bugs located by this query need to be reviewed to determine if they
should remain in NEEDINFO or changed to ASSIGNED or CLOSED (other states
could also apply).
o If a bug has been in NEEDINFO:reporter for less than 30 days -- no
action should be taken
o If a bug has been in NEEDINFO:reporter for greater than 30 days:
--it can be set to CLOSED:INSUFFICIENT_DATA if the information
requested of the bug reporter has not been provided and it appears no
further work can be done without this information.
--it can be set to ASSIGNED if the reporter has provided the
requested information
o If a bug has been in NEEDINFO:assignee (package maintainer) for more
than 30 days, review the comments and ping the maintainer as appropriate
to see what next steps can be taken.
*DO NOT* automatically close NEEDINFO bugs waiting on a package
maintainer.
If you come across a bug where you're not sure what to do, ask for help
on #fedora-qa or reply to this mail with the bug number and someone will
come to your aide :-)
Thanks for your help!
John
p.s. If you're looking for a bonus opportunity because everyone else
beat you to the bugs above--here is a query which will locate all of the
NEEDINFO bugs for Fedora 8 (currently 268 bugs):
http://tinyurl.com/5kcwkf You can apply the same steps as above.
p.s.s. If you have been intimidated by bugzilla's interface and fear
running your own query (I definitely used to be), check out how easy it
really is by scrolling to the bottom of the query results and clicking
on "edit search". Now you can search for your own favorite bugs to
triage :-)

atheros a5k wireless in newer kernels: not working?
by Benjamin De Kosnik
Hey. The 2.6.25-ish kernels supposedly support a5k wireless drivers, in
particular
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006EG
802.11 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
found in core2 mac minis.
So, I tried recent kernels in rawhide out on mine. Although now the card
seems to be found, and when I activate NM and scope out the wireless
scene the usual base station suspects can be found, I'm unable to
actually connect to anything.
Still, progress.
Since this is newly supported hardware, I am not surprised to see
difficulties but thought I'd ask around here to see if there are things
I should try or what other helpful data would be appropriate for a
bugzilla entry.
best,
benjamin

Latest NM and S-C-N
by David G. Mackay
I just installed the latest NetworkManager. It came up at boot, which
is good.
Just for fun, I deleted eth0 in sys-config-network, then re-added it.
It did not set the managed by NetworkManager flag, and it did not set up
DNS. Are the fixes for S-C-N due soon?

F9 preview's grub doesn't grok USB keyboards
by Rick Stevens
Just a warning...I just tried the F9 preview DVD (x86_64) and grub
doesn't respond to a USB keyboard. You can't select a different boot
option other than the default and (obviously) can't edit the boot
parameters.
I haven't played with BIOS settings, but the USB keyboard works fine
with F8's x86_64 DVD.
Just thought you should know.

As we've been testing GDM for accessibility support on Fedora 9, we
continue to note the lack of audio support. This means that a screen
reader user has no way to know when it's OK to login.
There is no "beep" on backspace at the Login and Passwd entry. More
seriously still:
SoundOnLogin=true
SoundOnLoginFile=[some].wav
in /etc/gdm/custom.conf continues broken.
Of course we're needing the additional benefit of starting Orca for TTS
via Ctrl-s, Orca with braille via Ctrl-b, etc. I can't comment on
anything other than sound myself, but will be happy to investigate the
other gestures if that's desired. But, what should we expect for sound?
