Using encrypted disks
by Anne Wilson
During install I was asked to give a password for encrypting the disk(s). In
the rawhide box there are two hard disks, and both were encrypted. Did I get
the chance to set different passwords for the two disks? I can't remember.
If I didn't, there isn't much sense in asking me for each disk's password,
but I wonder what circumstances are envisaged where you might want different
encryption on the two disks?

radeon driver on rawhide
by Gianluca Cecchi
I'm evaluating the radeon driver on my card with rawhide.
It is a Sapphire X1900 crossfire edition card, that has 512MB of memory:
lspci -v
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R580 [Radeon X1900
XT] (Primary) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 0d02
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at 80000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at 90200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
I/O ports at 2000 [size=256]
Expansion ROM at 90220000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [58] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [80] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+
Queue=0/0 Enable-
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc R580 [Radeon X1900 XT]
(Secondary)
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 0d03
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Memory at 90210000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [58] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
At the end of March I could use only text installer in rawhide because both
vesa and radeon drivers failed to load.
With latest updates ( anaconda-11.4.0.71-1 ) radeon driver is successfully
used and loads during installation. Well!
In the system, after install, I see this in my Xorg log:
(II) RADEON(0): Detected total video RAM=524288K, accessible=262144K (PCI
BAR=262144K)
(--) RADEON(0): Mapped VideoRAM: 262144 kByte (64 bit DDR SDRAM)
So it seems I only use half the available memory, correct?
How to get rid of this problem, in case?
I'm using EXA accel method because it is the only one that allows xvideo
with radeon driver.
And it seems stable, at least on my configuration, but it is not the default
one at the moment...

Any ideas on what is going wrong {machine was F8>F9Beta>updated daily} ?
Does this look like a local config {which was working fine until last
night} problem, or does it need a bz entry ?

Nvidia 173.08 and Rawhide
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Now that Nvidia has a driver that compiles against Rawhide,
has anyone gotten Compiz to work with it? What's the trick?
BTW 173.08 seems to work well with 64 Fedora 8, including
Compiz, Flightgear, et al..

xrandr error on wide screen .. how to correct now?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Experimenting xrandr features in rawhide via new screen resolution page, I
was able to resize and rotate the screen.
Then, stupidly, I tried to left rotate a wide screen with the effect that
the monitor went stdby..... ;-(
Rebooting and going to gdm and connecting with another user I get normal
screen, while using this user, after authentication in gdm, I continue
getting stdby monitor.
Anyone knows where this user based setting is stored so that I can eliminate
it?
Tried with xrandr with various parameters by a console session but I
(probably obviously) get the "can't open display" message .....
Thanks,
Gianluca

Fun while it lasted.

I tested fc9 on a 4400+ amd with 4gb ram with a M2V motherboard that included the Attansic Gigabit Ethernet card. Also included in the test system was a ATI Tech RV515 Radeon X1300 (Secondary) < Whatever that means.
There was also Promise ATA 133 Card attached to two Seagate 160Gb hard drives. The two IDE slots on the board where also attached to the a pair of identical 160Gb Seagates. There were also 3 Marvel SATA connectors that were unused. and a spare ST-LAB PATA ITE8212 ATA/133 card that I'm not sure could have been used as part of a raid array but could have been used for two more masters.
Overall the install went well and raid was easily configured. The system ran well enough.

I had some trouble with repo mirrors off the start but managed. I shut off a bunch of services and I had a very stable system. No error messages or pop ups from packagekit or otherwise. It felt right running it right from the install and I only ever crashed out once when using gtop.
The graphics where very sharp and wavy off the get go in gnome and I had to reduce screen resolution alot until I started using KDE then everything looked and felt right.
I hope you processed the smolt log for the machine and the hardware. Testing is over for this machine and despite centos not having the new Attansic ethernet driver I have it up and running on centos 5 now. The hdparm results above where from centos while copying the entire mysql directory tree over to her and also the entire web root (a lack lustre 750000 files under an hour more or less). It was pretty much the same with fc9.
