F8RC3 Intall fails on COMPAQ DC 7100
by Robert McBroom
F8RC3 DVD install fails with transfer of install data to hard drive on a HP/COMPAQ DC7100. DVD
tests good. Tried using the DVD as a repository for yum to upgrade an existing F7 installation but the file
structure has changed and it is not recognized as a repository.

Thoughts?
Why do there seem to be two pulseaudios involved here?
How might I have got two? I don't think I did anything silly:

I presume that if I carefully remove one of these, the problem will go
away, but if it's not of my own making, let's try to sort it out
properly first.

How do I get the network connection to happen automatically?
by Knute Johnson
When I start my F8rc3 computer the network connection doesn't happen
automatically. Also if I log out and back in the network connection
is disabled. I do I get it to work like it did on F7 and
automatically connect. If I am using my wireless connection and the
wired connection is plugged in and I pull out the wireless card, it
doesn't switch to the wired connection.
Here's if ifcfg-eth0
# Xircom Cardbus Ethernet 10/100
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
HWADDR=00:10:A4:93:4F:C8
ONBOOT=yes

How to get Sun's Java running on F8rc3!
by Knute Johnson
Ok, here's how I finally got it work.
As root -
1) Download the Sun Java Linux RPM from java.sun.com and install it.
2) Fix the Xinerama bug with
sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g'
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03//jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so
Save a copy if you want to restore it to original.
3) Put the link to
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/plugin/i386/ns7libjavaplugin_oji.so into
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
4) Install compat-libstdc++-33
Now you should be able to compile and run Java applications, run Java
Applets in Firefox and load and run Java Web Start programs.

Anybody got Sun's Java running on F8rc3?
by Knute Johnson
I'm not able to get Sun's Java up and running on my laptop with F8rc3
Live i686. I downloaded the Sun rpm.bin, installed it, installed the
jpackage utilities, installed the java-1.6.0-sun-compat rpm and set
the two links to the libjavaplugin_oji.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
and /usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.8/plugins. Still no joy.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

UUID - raid Labels - blkid vs mdadm
by shrek-m@gmx.de
hi,
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f8/en_US/sn-Installer.html#sn...
5.3.2ff Disk partitions must be labeled
this is a actually a F7 box and in a few days F8.
1;
is it normal that the blkid UUID from the "first raid1 device"
/dev/sdc1 == /dev/md0
but only /dev/sdc1 has the Label given with `e2label /dev/md0 /MD0`
(raid1 = sdc1, sdd1, sde1) ?
what will happen if the first raid-device is not available ?
# blkid /dev/md0 /dev/sdc1
/dev/md0: UUID="6a69e976-f945-4f7e-bda1-1859ac88211a" SEC_TYPE="ext2"

Freebsd 6.2 KOs FC8RC3
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I think I finally solved the Fedors booting problem on my
machine - the presence of a Freebsd 6.1 partition on one
of the drives. I removed that partition and now Fedora
runs normally.
The acid test will be the reaction of Fedora when I install
Freeebsd 7 on the offending partition.

Re: how to test compiz-manager
by Gianluca Cecchi
No,
I mean System --> Preferences --> Look and feel ---> GL Desktop
This launches gnome-compiz-preferences and from within the opened window you
can select
Enable GL Desktop
and then you are with compiz.... or at least a part of it... I don't know
you get the windows effects, the ctrl-Alt-mouse driven rotation of the cube,
but not the cube rotation when you select another desktop at bottom right.
And it seems this is in conflict with compiz-manager, at least with my
nvidia card.
If you have compiz-manager running and try to "Enable GL Desktop"
compiz-manager crashes.
I think it should be managed.

updating fstab entries
by Keith Roberts
I'm updating my FC6 fstab to use LABEL=xxx for mounting
partitions. All seems OK apart from the following two lines,
for the floppy drive and the DVD/CD-ROM drive:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0
/dev/hdd /media/dvdrecorder iso9660 rw,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
Can I use these lines as-is, for the Fedora 8 fstab?
TIA

Re- Coexistience
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
>IIRC a label of a file system is used inside of initrd.
That's great. Put it out of easy reach.
When I did the normal installs, the F8 root had a unique label.
After all that is what the installer is supposed to guarantee.
Of course I had th change labels when I loaded Fedora with
only one drive connected.
Maybe Fedora doesn't like being on the third HD but booted
from the first HD with chainloader+1
