Dave Jones' alpha kernel-smp-2.6.17-3001.FC5...thumbs up
by Gilbert Sebenste
I just got an update from Dave Jones' repository at
http://people.redhat.com/~davej/
And yum picked up on the alpha kernel there. I assume this is actually
2.6.18-rc7, but in any case...
Worksforme(tm Redhat). Machines are a P4 3.06 GHZ (HT turned on)
SW technology machine with a raid 0 array on one machine, and just an IDE
drive on another machine. 1.5 GB RAM on both. I saw no error messages on
boot up, which I did see on the 2.6.17 kernels (mostly warning messages
from bugs posted already here and on bugzillillillillillillalalalalala).

Problems encountered with FC6T3 installer
by J M
1.) I chose to not use DHCP, and I chose to not enable IPv6 (which greys out
the field to enter a static IPv6 address) yet the installer was still
forcing me to enter an IPv6 address, and not allowing me to continue. At
that point I had to enable IPv6 and enter a static address to continue.
2.) Entering bogus data into the IPv6 field causes the installer to crash.
I entered 4 or 5 colons, and the installer crashed.
3.) I chose to use the Fedora Extras repository and the installer complained
that it could not unmount /mnt/source. I could not get through this and had
to power down and restart the installer.

FC6 T3 install woes
by listman
I've tried 2 different dvd iso's (different servers and can not boot
either one ( FC-6-Test3-x86_64-DVD.iso)
Home built / ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce SPP 100 ATX
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
2048MB corsair XMS 3500LLPro
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200
RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
eVGA 256-P2-N584-AR Geforce 7900GT KO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
I then downloaded the cd ISO. I got to the beginning of the install, check
the media (was ok) then as soon as it searches for a previous install the
screen goes black - can see the cursor still but it just hangs. If I go to
the console I see a ton of errors ( how can I export this info)
I have tried text and noprobe but I still get the same thing, except in
text only mode I cant even read the errors- its just a bunch of strange
characters.
Thanks for any help - think it's time for t4

fc6-t3 upgrade from fc5 dies searching
by sean darcy
Using the fc6-t3 dvd, tested the media.
Tried linux text first. Ok until it starts searching for
previous installations. Then:
lots of garbage - looks like cyrillic characters
install exited abnormally [1/1]
Tried graphic install. X starts up. Again all's well until
it starts searching for previous installs. Worse, at least
from a users point of view, no error message - the cursor
just keeps spinning. YOu can see the error message at the
console.
This is an intel d945gtp board , ICH7, one sata drive, two
ata dvd's. On board intel 945g video, 1 gig ram. Pretty
standard.

Playing videos using Totem.
by Steven Haigh
Does anyone have a guide on how to get totem to play videos in rawhide?
I've been hunting around, however I haven't found anything that works
- not even for mpg's, let alone DivX etc.
TIA.

/proc/$PID/environ and /proc/$PID/cmdline
by Dawid Gajownik
Hi!
Is that normal, that some processes can have strange values in
/proc/$PID/environ and /proc/$PID/cmdline files? Here's the example:
[y4kk0@X ~]$ cat /proc/2089/environ
kk0/klaunchervHCnpc.slave-socket
/tmp/ksocket-y4kk0/kdesktopytHSwa.slave-socket[y4kk0@X ~]$
[y4kk0@X ~]$ cat /proc/2089/cmdline
kio_file [kdeinit] file /tmp/ksocket-y4kk0/klaunchervHCnpc.slave-socket
/tmp/ksocket-y4kk0/kdesktopytHSwa.slav
e-socket[y4kk0@X ~]$
[y4kk0@X ~]$ uname -r
2.6.17-1.2647.fc6
[y4kk0@X ~]$ ps aux | grep 2089
y4kk0 2089 0.0 0.9 28060 4844 ? S 22:14 0:00
kio_file [kdeinit] file /tmp/ksocket-y4kk0/kl
aunchervHCnpc.slave-socket /tmp/ksocket-y4kk0/kdesktopytHSwa.slave-socket
y4kk0 2524 0.0 0.1 3908 756 pts/5 S+ 22:24 0:00 grep 2089
[y4kk0@X ~]$
I was told that this is a Fedora's kernel bug. Is that true?
One more thing: I noticed that SELinux blocks access [1] to some files
in /proc directory. Some utilities does not know how to handle this
situation. For instance `ls -l /proc` run as root shows:
[snip]
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 wrz 16 22:14 mtrr
dr-xr-xr-x 6 root root 0 wrz 16 22:15 net

Is that a known problem or should I open a bug report?
