updates-testing: problem with boost libraries
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
the updates-testing repository is inconsistent at the moment.
KDEEdu requires the old boost python library and I had to leave boost
out of the update to get the repository installed.
FYI - starting to use the updates-testing repository on my main FC4
machine.

Gnome 2.12.1 and terminal
by Michael A. Peters
I just install rawhide (er, did an install of fc4 and yum updated to
rawhide) - and noticed that the terminal is no longer available by right
clicking on the desktop.
Is that intentional, a bug, or what?
I find it rather annoying personally. That's how I launch a Terminal.

Postinstall scriptlet failed due to missing theme index file
by Robin Green
I am not sure which component to file this bug against. Any ideas?
I installed rawhide recently, and chose the "Minimal" option in package
selections. I then installed OpenOffice.org and Eclipse using yum.
I received errors like the following:
Installing: eclipse-platform ####################### [70/75]
No theme index file in '/usr/share/icons/hicolor'.
If you really want to create an icon cache here, use --ignore-theme-index.
error: %post(eclipse-platform-3.1.1-1jpp_2fc.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
It seems that the eclipse-platform scriptlet assumes that another package
will have already installed a theme index file in
/usr/share/icons/hicolor - but that is not necessarily true. This problem
also exists for at least one other package (OpenOffice.org I think). So
I'm not sure whether I should file bugs against the individual packages
which trigger this problem, or against gtk, or against anaconda.

-----------------
* Mon Oct 10 2005 Dan Walsh <dwalsh(a)redhat.com> 1.9.14-1
- Upgrade to latest from NSA
* Fixed use of policydb_from_image/to_image to ensure proper
init of policydb.
* Isolated policydb internal headers under <sepol/policydb/*.h>.
These headers should only be used by users of the static libsepol.
Created new <sepol/policydb.h> with new public types and interfaces
for shared libsepol.
Created new <sepol/module.h> with public types and interfaces moved
or wrapped from old module.h, link.h, and expand.h, adjusted for
new public types for policydb and policy_file.
Added public interfaces to libsepol.map.
Some implementation changes visible to users of the static libsepol:
1) policydb_read no longer calls policydb_init.
Caller must do so first.
2) policydb_init no longer takes policy_type argument.
Caller must set policy_type separately.
3) expand_module automatically enables the global branch.
Caller no longer needs to do so.
4) policydb_write uses the policy_type and policyvers from the
policydb itself, and sepol_set_policyvers() has been removed.

cpuspped ceased to work
by Simon Lanzmich
Hi,
in all kernels after kernel-2.6.13-1.1582_FC5 the cpuspeed daemon does
not work on my machine.
I have a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ on an Asus K8V SE Deluxe
mainboard with 1GB of RAM.
At the beginning of boot with the latest kernel (2.6.13-1.1605_FC5), I
get the following message:
"powernow-k8: MP systems not supported by PSD BIOS structure"
Running "service cpuspeed start" does not give any output or error
message, while "/usr/sbin/cpuspeed" says:
Error: Could not open file for
writing: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
Error: No such file or directory
Do I have to do any changes to the cpuspeed config file, or is it a
problem with the kernel? I think it is the latter because with the
2.6.13-1.1582_FC5 kernel CPU frequency scaling works, but please correct
me if I'm wrong.
Thanks
Simon Lanzmich

Ejecting a drive from a laptop bay...
by Brian Anderson
I have an IBM T42p. I am running the latest rawhide system and I wanted
to try ejecting the drive from the bay. I found some mentiond of
/proc/acpi/ibm/bay which reports the bay status and accepts the command
"eject". However, when I send 'echo "eject" > /proc/acpi/ibm/bay' the
system freezes. I googled around and I can't find any documentation on
how one might eject a drive bay that isn't for pre-2.6 kernels. Can
someone give me some pointers on what I might be doing wrong if anything?
Thanks

Please use updates-testing
by Elliot Lee
Hi all,
I know a lot of you testers are using rawhide and helping test the latest
& greatest devel tree. This is really appreciated because it helps the
Fedora developers find problems they wouldn't be able to any other way,
and that results in better software in the end!
However, we're having another problem that is really bugging a lot of
users - the updates for existing releases are not getting enough testing.
For example, the last kernel update for FC4 panicked on boot on some
fairly normal systems.
So, I'd like to ask that some of you to stick with FC3 and especially FC4,
and to change your yum configurations to pull from updates-testing. Here's
a dumb little line of shell script to do it for you on FC4:
perl -pi -e 's,enabled=0,enabled=1,g' /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-testing.repo
>From that point on, it's just a matter of doing regular yum updates and
reporting bugs. Doing this will help ensure that the updates are just as
good as the initial releases!
On a related note, if anyone has the drive it takes to lead a Fedora QA
project to coordinate all the testing efforts, that would be a great way
to help Fedora overall. It'd be lots of work, and also lots of fun!
Best,

[SECURITY] Fedora Core 4 Test Update: openldap-2.2.29-1.FC4
by Jay Fenlason
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Fedora Test Update Notification
FEDORA-2005-992
2005-10-14
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 4
Name : openldap
Version : 2.2.29
Release : 1.FC4
Summary : The configuration files, libraries, and documentation for OpenLDAP.
Description :
OpenLDAP is an open source suite of LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol) applications and development tools. LDAP is a set of
protocols for accessing directory services (usually phone book style
information, but other information is possible) over the Internet,
similar to the way DNS (Domain Name System) information is propagated
over the Internet. The openldap package contains configuration files,
libraries, and documentation for OpenLDAP.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
This is an experimental upgrade of OpenLDAP to 2.2.29 for
FC4. Before I push it to final, I need some confirmation
that upgrading to it will not break existing
configurations. If I don't hear any objections, I should
push it to final in a week or so.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Fri Oct 14 2005 Jay Fenlason <fenlason(a)redhat.com> 2.2.29-1.FC4
- merge changes from rawhide and upgrade to 2.2.29
