Update agent problem
by Santiago Erquicia
I have just installed severn. My first problem is that I cannot
register my machine in RHN, so I cannot update the packages.
When I finish to enter all the information required, it says "Problem
registering username".
I know that there are also apt repositories around. Can you tell me
where can I found them?
Thanks in advance

where is alsa stuff at www.fedora.us?
by Robert P. J. Day
wanted to play with ALSA stuff on my severn system, so
i checked www.fedora.us, and i didn't see any alsa-related
rpms there.
pretty sure i can get them from over at freshrpms, but
i was just curious about their absence from fedora.
rday
p.s. what's the philosophical difference between freshrpms
and fedora, both of them being repositories for add-on rpms?

getting ALSA to work with 2.6.0-test4 kernel
by Robert P. J. Day
from reading various web sites and collecting that info, i get
the feeling i'm *really* close to getting ALSA working, so i'll
just summarize what i've done so far, and anyone is free to chime
in with what i did wrong. :-)
first, kernel config (some as modules, some built-in):
sound
(ALSA options) OSS emulation, mixer, PCM, sequencer
(PCI) ESS Maestro3 driver
RPMS (all from freshrpms)
alsa-lib
alsa-utils
alsa-driver
reboot with new 2.6.0-test4-bk7 kernel, and load various
modules so that i end up with (from modprobe):
soundcore
snd
snd_pcm
snd_timer
snd_ac97_codec
snd_page_alloc
snd_maestro3
so far, looks good. and i can scan /proc/asound to find a
number of new entries, including /proc/asound/cards which lists
my ESS Maestro3.
now, based on one website, run "alsamixer" and turn up volume
via both "Master" and "PCM", and ... now what?
if i run the standard "cdp" player, no volume. do i have to
use an alsa-specific player? have i forgotten something?
so close ...

cyclical dependencies?
by Vanco, Donald
Freshly installed severn
patched up2date / SSL cert, subscribed to beta updates
config up2date for d/l only; download via "up2date -u"
fix a few minor dependencies (tzdata for glibc-common, gtksourceview for
gedit) - up2date pulled the files but my "-Fvh" doesn't cover installing
what's not present
then:
[root@localhost up2date]# rpm -Fvh *.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
redhat-config-securitylevel-tui is needed by
redhat-config-securitylevel-1.2.3-1
[root@localhost up2date]# rpm -ivh
redhat-config-securitylevel-tui-1.2.3-1.i386.rpm
Preparing... ###########################################

file /usr/sbin/lokkit from install of
redhat-config-securitylevel-tui-1.2.3-1 conflicts with file from package
lokkit-0.50-24.1
[root@localhost up2date]# rpm -e lokkit
error: Failed dependencies:
lokkit is needed by (installed) redhat-config-securitylevel-1.1.3-1
...so - is this fairly expected? Had I not set up2date to download
only would these packages have been installed / removed as required?

Severn kernel
by Féliciano Matias
Now, my day to day system is severn with kernel-2.4.22...
The system work very well. Better than RH9.
Perhaps Gnome 2.4 use less memory or there are some features in the new
kernel that improve the overall performance when there are many I/O ?
Great job. Many thanks.

Crash at startup
by Olafur Arason
I got this message when starting Redhat 9.098. I tryed installing it again
but but I got the same message again. I tryed pressing I to enter
interactive startup but I cant seem to turn this of and I cant use my
computer. It takes for ever to install because my cdrom is alwayes
choking, but thats a diffrent matter and has notting to do with the
kernel.
Here is the what i could scribble down:
Starting pcmcia: PCI: Enabling device 00:0b (0000 -> 0002)
PCI: No IRQ known for interuption A of device 00:0b.0 -using IRQ 255
PCI: Enabling device 00:0b (0000 -> 0002)
PCI: No IRQ known for interuption B of device 00:0b.0 -using IRQ 255
Yenta IRQ list 04b8, PCI irq 0 socket status: 30000007
I could possible use tomsrtbt but I dont know what I'm looking for.

Paint Problems
by Paul Morgan
Has anybody else seen the following behavior?
When I maximize any given window for the first time, I get a minor paint
problem. The title bar and min/max/close buttons are offset slightly
left from where they should be, and a narrow grey area exists along the
right side of the screen from top to bottom.
I cannot send a screenshot because the act of taking a screenshot
corrects the problem. Clicking unmaximize and then maximize also fixes
the problem.
I am running Severn + up2date against latest RHN.

severn up2date oddities (was RE: cyclical dependencies?)

Ah - makes sense.
So - after upgrading 264 packages I rebooted.
Interesting things of note:
In GRUB menu, the UP kernel is now first with the SMP kernel second - they
were reversed prior to up2date.
Upon first boot kudzu hung the system (as far as I could tell - console not
responsive for many minutes) so I (hard) rebooted with "interactive" mode
skipping kudzu. This got me into the system.
Upon second boot I got
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
followed immediately by:
open (/dev/console) Input/output error
...and init quits. ctrl-alt-del functions to reboot system
(methinks kb/mouse config got garbled somehow?)
Third boot - kudzu now wants to remove "keyboard unknown".....
Fourth boot - back to "normal"
I did not move the positions of any USB devices in this process.
System:
Shuttle i865 based "XPC" system (includes graphics and AC97 sound)
2.4GHz P4 (800MHz FSB, HT enabled)
1/2GB 400MHz DDR
Serial ATA HD (with 8MB buffer - syncs seem to take a long time; for some
reason smartd does not do anything to this drive - just the floppy?)
USB KB & Mouse
USB digital media reader
USB floppy (not attached during any of this)
...don't know that anything here is particularly noteworthy, just
passing this on as it seems a bit messy..

Preferred way to report bugs that affect multiple RHL versions?
by Steve Bergman
Hi,
I just reported a problem with the stock ticker applet. Basically, it
looks like yahoo may have changed their format. I reported it for RH9,
but it affects rawhide and probably all other versions with stock ticker
as well.
What is the preferred way to report a bug like this. Bugzilla does not
allow selection of both RawHide and RedHat Linux, but duplicate bug
reports don't really make sense in this case.
Thanks,
Steve Bergman
