Need advice about agent plugin design
by Steven North
I am trying to design an RHQ/JON agent plugin to manage a software
resource with the following characteristics:
- there is the software itself (the installation);
- there are a variable number of "bundles" of configuration information
about 250KB in size each which need to be read from and written to the
agent; and
- there are "log" files which can 10-50MB in size each which need to be
read from the agent.
I think I am pretty clear on how to handle the software itself--just
like any number of other agents.
I am not sure how to handle the configuration bundles and the large log
files.
We might want to have the RHQ/JON server manage different versions of
these configuration files and distribute them to multiple remote agents.
Is there some existing domain object that would handle the read/write
aspect of the configuration bundles (zip files)? Could the "package"
concept be used for these? Would we need to create a new domain object
on the server side for these bundles? If so, is there an example of
this kind of thing?
For the log files, I see some mention of the SupportFacet. Would this
be appropriate for retrieving large log files? Is there an example of this?
We expect to access the configuration bundles and the log files using
remote client operations because we have a separate GUI tool to
build/edit the configuration bundles and to correlate and analyze the
log files. Is there an example of using a remote client to pull files
from and push files to remote agents?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give or examples you can point to.

JON Plugin for Websphere patching
by Bill Pulec
I'm attempting to get an estimate on the time and materials that would be required for a new plugin to extend JON to patch WebSphere libraries. I envision this plugin will allow the administrator to select a subset of WAS nodes and a new JAR library to add to the nodes, then have JON deploy(these would probably be stored on a shared drive) the JARs to the correct directories, remove the old version and then restart the WAS nodes(in specified order if need be). JON would then display status as to the success or failure of the patch.
Please let me know if you need any more details.
Thanks,

Fwd: [jboss-dev] Fwd: 7.0.0.CR1 "White Rabbit" is Released
by Charles Crouch
Heiko
Do we have a list of deltas (between what features we currently have in the as7 plugin and what we want to have for the 7 GA) and also outstanding JBAS bugs we've hit?
Cheers
Charles

I am happy to announce the candidate release for AS7!
In this release we closed a whopping 350 issues and made several notable
changes including
- More spec coverage!
- Clustering (Infinispan + HTTP Session Replication)
- CLI, Console, and management improvements
- Switched to EE Web Profile + JCA + JAX-RS/Resteasy + OSGi as default
config
+ JMS + WS are available in the "preview" profile
+ Each also has an HA profile with clustering
We would appreciate you taking it for a spin, and reporting any issues
you run into.
Before we hit final we are going to be putting energy towards adding
documentation (contributions welcome!). You can see an early starting
point here:
https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/AS7/Documentation
Thanks!

dependent values schema - remove db-upgrade steps
by John Mazzitelli
Heiko,
I see that you renamed a table in the last db-upgrade step. But this was
a table you just created within the last week or two IIRC.
I'm having dbsetup problems due to this - I can't dbsetup because the
table was renamed, and well, there are issues if we remove tables from
dbsetup - we need to flag these as obsoleted tables in the obsolete
schema. However, we only use that for supported tables (things we
released with) that we obsolete. Since this is a work in progress (and
the "original" table won't exist in released version - in fact, it has
only lived for a couple weeks!) we should not worry about it (i.e. we
should not create db-upgrade steps to rename it)
What you should do is collapse all your db-upgrade steps into one. Don't
worry about the renamed table, and just use the new table name (i.e.
create the new table in db-upgrade and do not worry about renaming it)
This way, dbsetup/dbupgrade is simpler, more compact.
Yes, this means developers need to blow away their DB if they need the
new stuff. So be it. That's what I am going to have to do anyway since
this isn't working for me anyway. So I didn't gain anything no matter what.
It also makes it easier for you, you don't have to start creating crazy
db-upgrade steps as you are developing this stuff.
And it makes it easier for the drift guys have have to merge master and
keep getting conflicts in the db-upgrade and pom.xml :)

I18N Devs: Please read
by Jay Shaughnessy
I18N devs, please see the updated wiki page before doing further work on
the resource bundles:
http://rhq-project.org/display/RHQ/Working+with+the+Resource+Bundles
In response to issues in the JA and DE locale files, as a result of my
work using the Eclipse plugin, there are a couple of important updates:
1) The resource bundles should be UTF-8 encoded.
I've updated the eclipse prefs in git for these files. IJ users may
need to do something analogous.
2) Eclipse plugin users MUST change a few Resource Bundle plugin
configuration settings.
Please see the Eclipse section of the wiki and update accordingly.
Hopefully we're good to go, but please let me know if you see any
problems. Git has been updated with new versions of all resource bundles.

JBoss AS7 & Plugins
by Stefan Negrea
Hello Heiko,
I am working on a mod_cluster RHQ plugin and maybe you can help me with a couple of JBoss AS7 details. The RHQ plugin you wrote uses JSON to communicate with the AS7 server. Is JSON used for the server's plugin system? Do you know where I can find some documentation about JSON services in JBoss? Do you know of any other changes to the JBoss plugin system?
mod_cluster dropped JMX interfaces and is part of the AS7 source tree (https://github.com/jbossas/jboss-as/tree/master/modcluster). Would it make sense to include mod_cluster support as part of the AS7 RHQ plugin you worked on?
Thank you,
Stefan Negrea

need suggestions: what resources want/need to support bundle deployments?
by John Mazzitelli
I need to finish up the bundle-to-non-platforms feature - the last thing
is to modify plugin descriptors so resources can be targets for bundles.
What resource types can or should support bundle deployments and where
should those bundle deployments be placed?
For example, in the JBoss AS 4 plugin, I added the ability to put
bundles in two places, the "Install Directory" (denoted by the plugin
configuration holding the home directory path) and the "Profile
Directory" (another plugin configuration property holding the
configuration set path).
What other plugins do we want to provide this kind of thing?
For one, I'm thinking the JBossAS 5 plugin should have the same thing as
the JBossAS 4 plugin.
NOTE: we can target bundles to paths that are stored in a resource's
plugin configuration, resource configuration or a metric trait value. So
if a resource stores a path in some resource config or trait, we can use
that too.
