Need advice about agent plugin design
by Steven North
I am trying to design an RHQ/JON agent plugin to manage a software
resource with the following characteristics:
- there is the software itself (the installation);
- there are a variable number of "bundles" of configuration information
about 250KB in size each which need to be read from and written to the
agent; and
- there are "log" files which can 10-50MB in size each which need to be
read from the agent.
I think I am pretty clear on how to handle the software itself--just
like any number of other agents.
I am not sure how to handle the configuration bundles and the large log
files.
We might want to have the RHQ/JON server manage different versions of
these configuration files and distribute them to multiple remote agents.
Is there some existing domain object that would handle the read/write
aspect of the configuration bundles (zip files)? Could the "package"
concept be used for these? Would we need to create a new domain object
on the server side for these bundles? If so, is there an example of
this kind of thing?
For the log files, I see some mention of the SupportFacet. Would this
be appropriate for retrieving large log files? Is there an example of this?
We expect to access the configuration bundles and the log files using
remote client operations because we have a separate GUI tool to
build/edit the configuration bundles and to correlate and analyze the
log files. Is there an example of using a remote client to pull files
from and push files to remote agents?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give or examples you can point to.

Replace old graphs in RHQ with GWT ones. GSOC 2012
by Denis Krusko
Hello!
My Name is Denis Krusko.
I am graduate student of Siberian Federal University (Russia).
I want to work with on the idea "Replace old graphs in RHQ with GWT ones"
I need to define milestones for 3 month like (proposed Heiko W.Rupp):
- evaluate Graphing options
- implement graphing to replace what is there
- resources
---- half time --
- possibility to e.g. take two metrics and graph them in one diagram
- write documentation
- graphs for the different kinds of groups ( can be in a later phase of
the project)
- remove old code
I would be grateful for comments and ideas.
Thank You,
Denis Krusko

RHQ UI Perf Test
by mike thompson
Attached is a sampling of performance tests that we are using to gauge which GWT compile style we are going to ship with.
The GWT compile options we have are:
1) GWT Detailed (largest application size with the benefit of easily read stack traces and debugging)
2) GWT OBF (obfuscated) w/Emulated Stack (allows for smaller code and also readable stack traces)
3) GWT OBF only (no easily understandable stack traces as source files and lines are obfuscated)
So this report is mainly to answer the above question on which GWT compile style we should uses and is not a comprehensive performance report.
Performance Specs
I sent this to the rhq-devel list but the attachment was too large and it bounced so this time I just supplied a link.

CLI script call fails while cmdline interface works :-(
by Andreas Dietrich
Hi,
I wrote the following script (myscript.js):
function reenableSchedules(resourceId) {
var crit = new MeasurementScheduleCriteria();
crit.addFilterEnabled(true);
crit.addFilterResourceId(resourceId);
var scheds = MeasurementScheduleManager.findSchedulesByCriteria(crit);
var mdefIds = [];
for (var s=0; s < scheds.length; s++)
mdefIds[s] = scheds[s].definition.id;
MeasurementScheduleManager.enableSchedulesForResource(resourceId,
mdefIds);
}
reenableSchedules(resId); // resId must be provided from the outside
Executing it with "rhq-remoting-cli-4.3.0/bin/rhq-cli.sh -u rhqadmin -p
<admpass> -s localhost -t 7080 --args-style=named -f myscript.js resId=0
returns:
Remote server version is: 4.3.0 (a9b2a27)

When I execute the above lines in the cmdline interface everything works
(I just copy/pasted the code inside the function line-by-line and set a
value for resourceId. :-(
Another (little) unrelated question would be how I can read indexed
parameters in the script. I.e. if I like to call it "... myscript.js
123" and not "... myscript.js resId=123"?
Kind regards
Andreas :-)

Re: Troubles with building rhq from source
by Krzysztof Kwaśniewski
Thanks for your help, Stefan. I'm sure I have the latest code, though
still I had to comment out groovy-script to make the project compile.
The modifications I had to apply are here: http://pastebin.com/8mU5aKxd

I always preferred the manual method for Ubuntu because I can get immediate access to all the versions published by Oracle/Sun (rather than waiting for the Debian/Ubuntu communities to repackage them as debs). While the Oracle JDK might not be a requirement for the project, you will most likely get the best results by using it.

Troubles with building rhq from source
by Krzysztof Kwaśniewski
Hi!
When trying to build RHQ from source, I have run into a couple of
troubles. I would like to ask for your help in resolving them. I'm
running Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64 upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04, I have OpenJDK
here as the Oracle's version has been recently removed from the
distribution due to the licensing incompatibilities.
mvn -v:
Apache Maven 2.2.1 (rdebian-6)
Java version: 1.7.0_147-icedtea
Java home: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre
Default locale: pl_PL, platform encoding: UTF-8
OS name: "linux" version: "3.0.0-17-generic" arch: "amd64" Family: "unix"
The first issue was with:
[wsprovide] Caused by:
com.sun.xml.bind.v2.runtime.IllegalAnnotationsException: 1 counts of
IllegalAnnotationExceptions
[wsprovide] java.lang.StackTraceElement does not have a no-arg default
constructor.
[wsprovide] this problem is related to the following location:
[wsprovide] at java.lang.StackTraceElement
[wsprovide] at public java.lang.StackTraceElement[]
java.lang.Throwable.getStackTrace()
[wsprovide] at java.lang.Throwable
[wsprovide] at private java.lang.Throwable[]
org.rhq.enterprise.server.webservices.jaxws.ExceptionBean.suppressed
[wsprovide] at
org.rhq.enterprise.server.webservices.jaxws.ExceptionBean
Full stack trace: http://pastebin.com/ZWNkx9u7
Heiko advised me to comment out
<profile>
<id>enterprise</id>
<activation>
<property>
<name>enterprise</name>
</property>
</activation>
<modules>
<module>webservices</module>
</modules>
</profile>
from modules/enterprise/remoting/pom.xml and this error was resolved.
The error I have encountered most recently is here:
http://pastebin.com/AGie2Bzx. Shortly: Caused by:
org.apache.maven.plugin.MojoFailureException: Signature errors found.
Verify them and put @IgnoreJRERequirement on them.
I have updated all the sources to the newest version using git
pull, is it right? So far I haven't used git extensively.
Do you have any clue what might be wrong here?
Best regards

About GSoC: Welcome Denis and Krzysztof
by Heiko W.Rupp
On monday night, Google has announced the 1212 students (out of >>4000) that were accepted for this year's
Google Summer of Code (TM). Jboss.org had the luck to obtain 8 slots and two of those went to RHQ.
So please welcome:
- Denis Krusko (kruskod on irc) to work on replacing the old graphs with GWT ones
- Krzysztof (krzykwas on irc) to work on a RHQ agent in Python that can talk to RHQ via REST and via AMPQ to Matahari agents.
See also this blog post http://pilhuhn.blogspot.com/2012/04/rhq-participates-in-this-years-google...
For all the others that did not make it, you are still more than welcome to work with us and to contribute to RHQ.
Heiko

Where in the CreateResource machinery is the timeout set / checked / enforced ?
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
I am currently looking at org.rhq.core.pc.inventory.ResourceFactoryManager#createResource
and see a timeout being passed in via the request. This is then handed over to the CreateChildResourceFacet
which is passed to the CreateResourceRunner.
Where is the timeout actually enforced? Like in a Future.get(timeout) call?
Thanks
Heiko
