LRU_GEN doesn't really care about NR_CPUS. IOW, it doesn't impose a
max number. The dependency is with NODES_SHIFT selected by MAXSMP:
default "10" if MAXSMP
This combined with LAST_CPUPID_SHIFT can exhaust the spare bits in page flags.
MAXSMP is meant for kernel developers to test their code, and it
should not be used in production [1]. But some distros unfortunately
ship kernels built with this option, e.g., Fedora and Ubuntu. And
their users reported build errors to me after they applied MGLRU on
those kernels ("Not enough bits in page flags"). Let me add Fedora and
Ubuntu to this thread.
Fedora and Ubuntu,
Could you please clarify if there is a reason to ship kernels built
with MAXSMP? Otherwise, please consider disabling this option. Thanks.
As per above, MAXSMP enables ridiculously large numbers of CPUs and
NUMA nodes for testing purposes. It is detrimental to performance,
e.g., CPUMASK_OFFSTACK.

[OS-BUILD PATCHv4] mm/sparsemem: Fix 'mem_section' will never be NULL
gcc 12
warning
by Justin M. Forbes (via Email Bridge)
From: Waiman Long <longman(a)redhat.com>
mm/sparsemem: Fix 'mem_section' will never be NULL gcc 12 warning
The gcc 12 compiler reports a "'mem_section' will never be NULL"
warning on the following code:
static inline struct mem_section *__nr_to_section(unsigned long nr)
{
#ifdef CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME
if (!mem_section)
return NULL;
#endif
if (!mem_section[SECTION_NR_TO_ROOT(nr)])
return NULL;
:
It happens with both CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME on and off. The mem_section
definition is
#ifdef CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME
extern struct mem_section **mem_section;
#else
extern struct mem_section mem_section[NR_SECTION_ROOTS][SECTIONS_PER_ROOT];
#endif
In the CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME case, mem_section obviously cannot
be NULL, but *mem_section can be if memory hasn't been allocated for
the dynamic mem_section[] array yet. In the !CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME
case, mem_section is a static 2-dimensional array and so the check
"!mem_section[SECTION_NR_TO_ROOT(nr)]" doesn't make sense.
Fix this warning by checking for "!*mem_section" instead of
"!mem_section" and moving the "!mem_section[SECTION_NR_TO_ROOT(nr)]"
check up inside the CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME block.
Fixes: 83e3c48729d9 ("mm/sparsemem: Allocate mem_section at runtime for CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME=y")
Fixes: 3e347261a80b ("sparsemem extreme implementation")

The kernel-ark os-build branch has been rebased.
by Justin Forbes
As we have done since 5.15, we have done this again for os-build, we expect
to keep it up as a cadence with every upstream release. This means we
will do it again when 5.18 releases, and again with 5.19... It is
difficult to manage a regularly rebased tree, because any outstanding
MR is invalidated and has to also be rebased. But not doing somewhat
regular rebases can also be difficult in the spirit of the openness
that Fedora is based upon. While there are plenty of ways to see
which patches we carry compared to upstream, some of those patches are
fairly old, and would not apply cleanly at all to a modern tree after
several releases were merged in with them. As we have gotten into a
flow of things with merge requests, we can get to the point of very
few outstanding MRs towards the end of a release cycle, and that makes
it an opportune time to rebase the tree. This also means that the
patches we carry should be no more than 1 release out of date, making
them easier to apply to various other trees. I do realize that this
is a minor inconvenience every 2-3 months, but I believe the results
are worth it.
Thanks,
Justin

Fedora tarball names
by Prarit Bhargava
While working on the Makefiles I've noticed that the tarball names are
different for Fedora vs CentOS/RHEL.
Fedora uses an upstream based tarball version whereas CENTOS/RHEL use a
tarball version that is based off the RPM NVR.
Simple question: Does Fedora *require* an upstream based tarball
version? It doesn't seem like one is necessary from the kernel.spec but
there might be other considerations to take into account.

[OS-BUILD PATCHv4 0/0] Add Partner Supported taint flag
by Alice Mitchell (via Email Bridge)
From: Alice Mitchell on gitlab.com
Merge Request: https://gitlab.com/cki-project/kernel-ark/-/merge_requests/1603
NOTE: Truncated patchset due to missing public @redhat.com email
address on your GitLab profile at https://gitlab.com/-/profile.
Once that is fixed, close and reopen the merge request to
retrigger sending the emails.
This is to add a new kernel taint flag that indicates that this
is a Partner Supported GPL module and not directly Supported
by Red Hat, as per the policy document for partner Supported
upstream kernel modules as linked from the bugzilla.
Use of rh_flags is deemed not appropriate in this case as that mechanism was
developed with the intent of not tainting the kernel in a common scenario,
where as in this case this taint flag
1. is for a rare scenario so we need high visibility on it
2. will trigger a different support workflow
Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2038999
Upstream Status: RHEL only
