Hi all,
I am looking for feedback and review on fedora-comps#569, which adds new
package groups, an environment, and category for the i3 window manager:
https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/569
This is the first time I have made edits to the comps file. So a sanity
check to make sure I did this right for a new desktop environment would
be helpful, especially about inheriting the right set of default packages.
This matches the drafted package group as found in the Fedora i3 SIG's
package groups:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/i3/package-groups/
Per the documentation for comps, I wanted to use this thread as a way to
get feedback on the change before it gets merged.
Thanks!

Hi folks (sway list CC'd as this also relevant for sway),
in case you missed the thread on devel about systemd-oomd, the (imho)
most important message for the i3 spin is below.
If I understand this correctly, we'll have to ensure that systemd-oomd
is disabled in the i3 spin, as it will simply kill the whole desktop if
anything starts consuming too much memory. Unless anyone has an idea how
to put every application that is launched from i3 into a cgroup in the
same way that gnome shell already does that? The later would be of
course preferable, as having apps in cgroups has a lot of advantages,
but I don't know how feasible it is for us to achieve this.
Cheers & happy holidays,
Dan

If your desktop doesn't segregate apps and services into cgroups,
systemd-oomd will kill the entire desktop whenever anything uses too
much memory, because the desktop is going to be running in the same
cgroup as the apps that it launches. So I think desktop spins (other
than KDE) ought to opt out of this. It should be good for all Fedora
editions, though (including Workstation, Server, Atomic, CoreOS), and
also for KDE spin.

Hi, I thought this Change was exciting to see, even if it has some room
to improve as pointed out earlier in the thread.

An alternative to `pavucontrol` is something we discussed in the i3wm
SIG. Currently we find it to be the most intuitive graphical interface
available for managing audio devices and streams.
One thing I would like to see (without having looked very hard yet) is
to know what the migration impact is for end-users moving from
PulseAudio controller tools and interfaces to PipeWire.

Me too! I know I would probably try this out on my personal Workstation
i
f I had some good docs on how to migrate it. Especially with some kind
of estimate of time needed to complete, so I can measure how long before
I will need a functioning audio stack to jump into a video call where
people need to hear/see me. ;)

Hi all,
The i3 SIG met briefly in IRC/Telegram today. We are requesting final
reviews and comments on the Fedora 34 Change Proposal before we submit
it to the Fedora Program Manager:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/i3/SpinChangeProposal_Draft
SIG members, please make any edits directly to the page. We also welcome
feedback and suggestions here on the mailing list, if you have thoughts.
We plan to submit by E.O.D. on Tuesday, 24 November 2020. Once we
submit, this will announce the Change to the wider Fedora Community on
devel-announce(a)lists.fp.o and feature in Ben Cotton's weekly Community
Blog report. There will be more visibility into the SIG's work after we
submit this Change.
Once we submit, in our next meeting, I propose we draft a "release
checklist" to help document the steps we are taking in order to build
and release the i3 Spin for the first time.
Until then… please review the F34 Change proposal and let us know if you
have feedback or suggestions:

Hi all,
I made a first pass on the F34 Change Proposal, and would like feedback
from the i3 SIG or anyone interested in the i3 Spin for Fedora:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/i3/SpinChangeProposal_Draft
Note that the "Scope" and "How to Test" sections are incomplete. They
will need to be finished before we officially submit this Change to the
Release Wrangler (Ben).
What is written there now isn't new or anything unexpected. Or, it
shouldn't be. :-) The feedback I am looking for right now is to make
sure that what is written there is what other SIG members expect.
In our next meeting, we can discuss the remaining sections and go over
any feedback on the current draft.
Please drop a line on the mailing list with your thoughts! It will help
to collect feedback here so we can review it later for our meeting.
Thanks!

Hi all! The i3 SIG met today over video call. The video recording is below:
https://youtu.be/GDizij4Isng
We reviewed the following topics:
* ISO build / Kickstart status
* GTK Race Condition and default wallpaper
* F34 Change Proposal
* Spin Guidelines
* Packaging groups
I think this is a good format for our calls. Maybe we should make one of
our two monthly meetings an audio/video call. :)
Some action items logged from IRC:
* jwf
* Write 1st draft of i3 Spin Change Proposal (by 20 Oct. meeting)
* nasirhm
* Confirm Kickstart meets Spins Guidelines
* Open a pagure.io/i3-spin/docs issue for user docs, revisit in F34
