Wow. Regardless of what if anything happens with the XFCE spin,
million thanks Miro for this tip on Atril! I'd missed this gem
entirely and wasted much energy at cursing at current Evince (it used
to be such a nice app...)

UI sanity?
Atril wont save space, on the contrary it drags in mate-desktop-libs
to the picture, however it fits the overall look and feel MUCH better
than any of those "modern" gtk3 abominations.
+1 from me. I've been using it a long time instead of evince (with a
short mupdf interlude which renders pdfs much faster and much better,
however it does not have any gui...), because of the UI insanity that is
happening with (almost) every gnome app. Atril is perfectly usable,
works and I hadn't noticed any bugs in couple of years of daily usage.
