I think that you replied (privately) to the wrong person. :-) You are
correct, drives are divided into zones. There's a program bundled
with bonnie++ called "zcav" that will measure the I/O rate discrepancies.
It should be saw-tooth, since the gaps grow until a new block can be
inserted.
