Answering my own question after a bit of comparison
between f18 and f17:
Not only did the autohint file move to
/usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/10-autohint.conf,
but the content changed as well.
Instead of a symlink, I made a copy and changed the
"append" operation to "assign", and suddenly the
scales fell from my eyes! I could see again!
Did you notice that after doing that you get the following warning when starting some
applications from the command line?
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf", line 9: reading
configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.
