Agreed, the screensaver screen ("the shield") behavior is sub-optimal. It
forces you to drag it up using a mouse or hit Esc. Nothing else works.
In 3.5.92 you can also press Enter/Return or use the mousewheel and
you can start typing while the animation is ongoing.
Please file a ticket against gnome-screensaver.
The screenshield is part of gnome-shell not gnome-screensaver.
