Save yourself time and effort.
Go to
rpm.livna.org.
Install livna-release for Fedora 9
Diable the stable repo and enable the development repo
# yum install mplayer

Will do this for other machine that a friend is building for me :)

Currently trying the following advice from Linux Questions
./configure --disable-ivtv
