No NM icon in the taskbar, is this known? Couldn't find relevant bugzilla.
Has anyone else come across it?

No, and I run and test Xfce on a number of rawhide/live setups.
Are you sure NetworkManager is installed and running? Do you have a system tray added to an Xfce panel for it to display in?

When I installed XFCE from boot.iso (rawhide) for some reason NetworkManager-Gnome didn't get pulled in. (maybe it doesn't), but it gave me the icon\applet back.

Yeah, depending on how and what you selected on the install it might not have.
Hopefully it's all working for you now.
