Try booting to text mode; edit the kernel command line, remove 'rhgb
quiet', and add '3' (just the number 3). then let it boot and see what
happens.
Another tip for desktop hangs with ATI video cards (especially r600
cards and higher) is to add
pcie_aspm=off
to the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf. Although I heard there was a fix
in progress for requiring this kernel option.
