gnome-shell would be the one I'd go with - Shell does its own screen
locking these days.
I think I've read about this being caused by Shell crashing condition
while it's locked / when you go to unlock, but IIRC they put a change in
3.10 that was supposed to 'fix' that. So maybe this isn't the same
thing.
Just happened again. Monitor woke up, black screen with mouse pointer.
I could move the mouse pointer, but that's all. Switched to VC, ran
debuginfo-install gnome-shell, waited for download. Suddenly, the
screen flickered, and the screen lock's password prompt appeared, but
didn't accept any input (neither mouse nor keyboard). Attaching gdb to
gnome-shell process was a bad idea. It couldn't backtrace anything.
