whether it's an i386 or x86_64 install? it doesn't seem to, which is
going to leave 64-bit users more than a little confused if they don't
appreciate the difference and they end up with what is allegedly a
successful plugin install that still doesn't work.

Well, a 64-bit proprietary flash plugin IS available, although it's only
an alpha version. You can follow mjw's directions and install a 32bit
version, but you can go to
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
and try the 64-bit version.
You can also use this specfile to build a nice rpm package for yourself:
