A followup in case folks google for something like this.
Firstly, my caveats about VMware's site seem to be gone, this time, it went
right to 5.0.1 and downloaded in a few seconds. So no problems
downloading.
Secondly, did a test installation, this time choosing Gnome Desktop
install, as opposed to what I tried last time, minimal install, then adding
Gnome. When using Gnome, and presumably, some of the other default
desktops, VMware-player installs as expected. So, I'm guessing that the
VMware packagers are expecting some things to be there that don't get
installed with a minimal install, adding X afterwards.
Thanks again.
