Review of Fedora 18 Release Criteria (Second Attempt)
by Tim Flink
While the last conversation around the F18 release criteria did yeild
some interesting information, it wasn't quite what I had in mind so
let's try this again :)
With all of the criteria changes we've had for F18, we'd like to get
some feedback on the current criteria to make sure that we're not
either overreaching or missing some important functionality. We're
interested in feedback on the criteria themselves instead of the
blocker or criteria review process. I've listed the new and revised
criteria for F18 at the end of this email but input on the old criteria
would also be appreciated.

============================================================
New/Changed Alpha Release Criteria
============================================================
The installer must be able to install each of the release blocking
desktops, as well as the minimal package set, with each supported
installation method
The installer must be able to complete an installation using automatic
partitioning to any sufficiently large target disk, whether
unformatted, empty, or containing any kind of existing data
The installer must allow the user to select which of the disks
connected to the system will be affected by the installation process.
Disks not selected as installation targets must not be affected by the
installation process in any way
============================================================
New/Changed Beta Release Criteria
============================================================
The installer must be able to complete an installation using automatic
partitioning to a validly-formatted disk with sufficient empty space,
using the empty space and installing a bootloader but leaving the
pre-existing partitions and data untouched
=== This is still under review - waiting for input ===
The installer's custom partitioning mode must be capable of the
following:
* Creating, destroying and assigning mount points to partitions of
any specified size using most commonly-used filesystem types
* Creating encrypted partitions
* Rejecting obviously invalid operations without crashing
For each one of the release-blocking package sets ('minimal', and the
package sets for each one of the release-blocking desktops), it must be
possible to successfully complete an upgrade from a fully updated
installation of the previous stable Fedora release with that package
set installed, using any officially recommended upgrade mechanisms. The
upgraded system must meet all release criteria.
============================================================
New/Changed Final Release Criteria
============================================================
For each one of the release-blocking package sets ('minimal', and the
package sets for each one of the release-blocking desktops), it must be
possible to successfully complete an upgrade from a fully updated
installation of the previous stable Fedora release with that package
set installed, using all officially recommended upgrade mechanisms. The
upgraded system must meet all release criteria.

What we're trying to do with the criteria is reduce the occurrence of
'case-by-case evaluation' as much as we can. It's inevitably the case
that we can't entirely eliminate it, but we want to make things as
objective as we can.

Ah, the old RHEL attitude again ;) Funny how things come in twos. This
seems to be a RHEL strategy - throw everything but the kitchen sink on
the 'blocker' list early in the process, and get tighter closer to
release.
That's not how we do things in Fedora, we do things the other way
around, really. Note that in Fedora the blocker list is not a todo list
or a 'let's not forget about these bugs' list. It is a _list of bugs
that block the release_. That's all it is. No bug is ever intended to be
on the list of blockers for a given release unless it's really and truly
blocking that release. We don't use the blocker list for 'just so that
it gets done' purposes. We decided a few years back that that way of
doing things kind of sucked, and designed a more rigorous way of doing
things :)
If you think it wouldn't realistic to say 'we'll take any persistent
moderate flaw as a blocker' that's valuable feedback...then the question
becomes do we only bother about important+ bugs, do we try and come up
with some kind of solid definition for what 'moderate' bugs we'll
consider blockers and which ones we won't, or do we just say 'we'll
evaluate 'moderate' bugs on a case-by-case basis'.

The way you say it it does sound like there's a difference, because for
Fedora, a 0-day update is just any update that happens to have been
pushed stable by the official release date. There's no special handling
of such updates, they just happen. What actually happens is that we lift
freeze after the go/no-go meeting but before release; any update that
accumulates sufficient karma and gets pushed 'stable' in the period
between the freeze being lifted and the release going out becomes a
0-day update, i.e., it's available on release day. There's no special
shepherding of such updates, usually.

Yup, that's useful feedback indeed, and thanks.

For this thread I want to keep it to what goes in the release criteria,
if we can. If we spread the discussion too wide we'll never get done.
Note that, if I'm understanding your mail correct, what you call
'persistent flaws' is what I'm referring to when I talk about 'cannot be
fully resolved by a package update' - we're talking about stuff in the
install process or live boot or first boot, which we can't resolve just
by shipping an update. That's why I made that distinction and gave those
bugs, in general, more importance.
What's your opinion on "moderate bugs that can't be fixed by
updates" (i.e. persistent flaws) as a Final blocker? Is that going too
far?
Note the blocker process is pretty much orthogonal to priority/severity.
A blocker issue for Fedora is a blocker. We don't ship the release
without fixing it. It's a very simple binary state. It doesn't matter
what priority/severity a blocker bug happens to get assigned, it must be
fixed for the release to go out.

Yeah, that would be too ambitious. The other difference in Fedora is we
don't consider 0-day updates part of a release. We ship a bunch of
0-days, but they're just not considered in the 'release process', except
in very special circumstances. Blocker bugs have to be fixed *in the
release package set* (what gets frozen).

Really it's just about getting things into the policy. 'Achieving the
goal without really aiming for it' is fine and all, but it's not
bulletproof :) There've been a few cases where we've kinda wanted to
take security bugs as blockers but simply haven't had a framework for
it. We're very strict on the blocker process these days: we don't just
throw the 'blocker' status around arbitrarily. There _has_ to be a
justification for it in the criteria.

Yes, I think we're somewhat out of scope here. If you want to start up
that discussion then go for it, but I'd _really_ like to keep criterion
proposal threads on track, because they're not talking shops. Criteria
revisions are important actions in QA, this isn't just a trial balloon,
the intent is to put something in place in a fairly short term here.

----------
TOPIC: Previous meeting follow-up
=======================================================================
* "adamw to propose a criterion covering basic (not advanced)
re-use of /home for Beta" - not done yet, sorry
* "adamw to consider revisions to 'kickstart delivery method'
criterion" - not done yet
* "tflink to ask other interested parties (anaconda team,
fesco...) to look over the beta criteria and see if there's
anything they feel should be dialled down" - not done yet
TOPIC: Release criteria proposals
=======================================================================
* Proposed changes to the upgrade criteria for Beta and Final
were accepted (see log for exact text)
TOPIC: Fedora 18 Beta status / mini blocker review
=======================================================================
* Agreed that we recommended slipping of freeze due to no
currently testable upgrade tool for F18
* Outside of the upgrade tool, install w/ RAID and/or LUKS was
another potential issue that needs re-testing

ACTION ITEMS
=======================================================================
* adamw to consider revisions to 'kickstart delivery method'
criterion
* tflink to ask other interested parties (anaconda team,

----------
TOPIC: Previous meeting follow-up
=======================================================================
* "adamw to consider revisions to 'kickstart delivery method'
criterion" - Adam still didn't get enough round tuits, sorry
* "tflink to ask other interested parties (anaconda team,
fesco...) to look over the beta criteria and see if there's
anything they feel should be dialled down" - Tim posted a
thread that got some responses but it went down a detour, we
will try again
TOPIC: Fedora 18 Beta status / mini blocker review
=======================================================================
* F18 Beta TC4 landed Saturday, comes with a regression in
NetworkManager[1]
* New upgrade tool is still not testable so far as we know
* We agreed that as new upgrade tool is still not complete, QA
does not recommend freezing for Beta at this time
* See wiki page for results of mini blocker review
TOPIC: Open Floor
=======================================================================

ACTION ITEMS
=======================================================================
* tflink try again with asking other teams to review the
updated release criteria
* adamw to update fesco freeze ticket
2012-10-22
----------
TOPIC: Previous meeting follow-up
=======================================================================
* "tflink try again with asking other teams to review the
updated release criteria" - tim forgot about this, he'll do
it now
* "adamw to update fesco freeze ticket" - this was done[2]
TOPIC: Fedora 18 Beta status / mini blocker review
=======================================================================
* The new upgrade tool was still not ready, Will says he will
have it ready this week if all goes well
* Agreed that QA still could not recommend freezing for Beta as
new upgrade tool is still not available for testing: we would
pass this recommendation to FESCo but recognize FESCo may go
against the recommendation due to time pressures
* TC6 seemed a decent build, we would continue with the
validation testing
* See wiki page for results of mini blocker review
TOPIC: Release criteria / test cases
=======================================================================
* Adam was still working on the partitioning criteria, general
agreement at the meeting that requirements for custom
partitioning should not be heavy at beta time
* Many test cases still needed revising for newui, if you feel
like helping out, please do
TOPIC: Open Floor

F18 NM IPv6 not working with address auto configuration
by Erinn Looney-Triggs
This is one of those "it used to work, I think" things.
Fedora 18.
NetworkManager-0.9.7.0-6.git20121004.fc18.x86_64
On subnet with IPv6 address auto configuration enabled. NetworkManager
brings up interface, link-local (fe80) address is configured, however no
global address is configured.
Link is an ethernet (hard) link, and it is configured to use IPv6
automatically.
There are many other systems on this network segment that are all
working with address auto configuration, so I believe it is endemic to
NetworkManager.
Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas?
