Fedora needs your help
by Nicolas Mailhot
Dear all,
As some of you know Fedora 11 will feature automatic font installation¹.
This is a genuinely new feature that does not try to ape what other
operating systems do and play on Linux's traditional attention to
localization and internationalization. It's a free/libre alternative to
the DRM-ed distribution channels proprietary foundries are pushing right
now².
However, awesome new installation code is not sufficient. To work well
this feature requires a large and sane font package pool to draw on. To
provide this pool the Fonts SIG has worked hard to define clear and sane
packaging guidelines last year³.
The maintainers of affected packages were notified two months ago of
needed changes⁴. However, while many reacted fast, others have still not
started looking at it⁵.
With only one month left before Fedora 11 beta it's time for others to
step up and help adapt the remaining packages. Please take a look at the
bugzilla tracker⁴, adopt an open bug, and propose spec file changes
there. Extensive documentation was written⁶ for this operation and you
do not need to be a font expert to participate.
Also, changing such a large pool of packages is never mistake-free, and
we also need testers to QA⁷ the changes. Please take a look at the
bugzilla tracker⁴, adopt a closed bug, and check the corresponding
package was converted properly.
I'm afraid we are massively short-handed right now. Please help.

rawhide M.I.A. today?
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
There is obviously something wrong with the usual rawhide update
mechanisms today.
Can someone provide a word as to just what is happening?
Is there a fedora page somewhere that provides some information about
the rawhide updates status? (e.g. a bohdi or some other automated
status page?)

Had a laptop supported by madwifi in Fedora 7 pre testing stages, but as of now it is supported by ath9k or ath5k :), I believe this is Mr. J. Linville's puppy. They are doing a great job BTW, but there might be some hardware which is still not supported all the way that makes madwifi still necessary :)

yum rawhide repository broken?
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
I'm getting a yum error stating that the repomd.xml file can't be
located in yesterday's rawhide (20090220)
The file is in the local mirror at
..../development/i386/os/repodata/repomd.xml
(where .... is my local lead-in to the dir)
is this because of the i386->i586 transition?

mdadm and udev rules issue with today's rawhide
by Bruno Wolff III
I updated to today's rawhide and then reboot's didn't complete until after
I removed /etc/udev/rules.d/70-mdadm-assemble.rules .
That's odd because udev wasn't updated today, though mdadm was. But
the above rules are part of the udev package.
I got warning messages doing the udev parts of the boot process that 3 of
the arrays were already running.
The device names for the arrays were different than they had been before
removing the rules file. So maybe the problem was that things were getting
done twice and removing either file would have worked.

Ext4
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I have been using ext4 on the omen.com server since I installed
Fedora 10 on it shortly after the release of Fedora 10. My
main test system also uses ext4 most of the time.
I have seen the ext4 benefits including dramatically faster
fsck times on large file systems.
The only issue I've seen is the long time it takes to unmount a
file system, even one that has been inactive for a few minutes.

No deadline I/O scheduler for 2.6.29-0.137.rc5.git4.fc11
by Bruno Wolff III
When I booted up the 2.6.29-0.137.rc5.git4.fc11.x86_64 kernel today I got
an error message about there not being a deadline scheduler. I didn't see
a changelog entry that covered this. Is this a temporary change?

Anybody testing ext4 in Fedora 11 Alpha?
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
is anybody testing ext4 in Fedora 11? I added ext4 as boot parameter
but when I go to custom partitioning I only get offered ext2 and ext3
as options. Why?
Do you have any suggestions how can I make custom partitions and
format them via ext4?
Cheers,
Valent.
