FC6t2: i386 -devel packages installed on x86-64 system
by Michel Salim
Installing FC6t2 from the x86-64 DVD, I selected all optional
installation sets (software development, web server, etc.) but opted
not to customize the package list. After installation the following
i386 -devel packages were installed, to my surprise - as best as
memory serves, no i386 -devel packages were ever included in the
x86-64 trees.
evolution-data-server-devel
gnome-desktop-devel
gnome-panel-devel
gnome-pilot-devel
There probably are others that I missed.
Even more bizzarely, some applications were duplicated as well:
control-center
evolution
evolution-data-server
gaim
gnome-media
gnome-utils
nautilus
nautilus-cd-burner
totem
Is there a reason behind this, or is this a bug in the package set?
Thanks,

AIGLX mess in FC5-6
by Adam Pribyl
First I'd like to say, there is still lot of confusion about AIGXL and
composition managers in Fedora. From time the FC5 was released there is
not clear statement, wherether the AIGLX is really in Xorg that is
distributed with FC as it seems from Release notes
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc5/release-notes-ISO/#id3148356
or it has to be installed separately as described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject/AiglxOnFedora
According to my experience AIGLX is not included in basic FC instalation
and you have to extend the repository to aiglx and update your
instalation. Without this you only get flickering screen and loose your
window decoration when triing to enable the metacity composition with
gconftool-2. If you try to install AIGLX and use compiz from aiglx
repository at the moment, you get unresolved dependencies for libwnck >=
2.15.4, in FC5 there is now latest 2.14.3.
In the case you want to revert AIGLX updates there is no describtion how
to do that.
In FC5 gdm configuration, man can choose to use "aiglx" server (Xair).
There si no such thing like Xair anymore from official sources. Switching
this results in unusable X and hand edits to gdm configuration.
There is nowhere clearly stated what graphics card the AIGLX is confirmed
working or was tested on. On the page
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject/aiglx
it says all Radeon 7000-9250 is known to work, however, from my personal
experience, on Radeon 9200 it is not working as it should (got blue
screen with shadows switching with screen with menus and apps - unusable).
It does not state wherether I have to use for ATI Radeon cards "radeon"
driver or "ati" driver or this does not mather.
I am also curious, wherether AIGLX could work without DRI or not, and I am
not alone. There are several people, that report glxinfo says No to
render, however AIGLX says enabled (I did not saw it personaly.).
Even there is no big interest in Fedora Project AIGLX working with
proprietary fglrx and nvidia drivers, it would be nice to make sure the
statement that is on aiglx page
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RenderingProject/aiglx?highlight=%28aiglx%2...
is still true or not.
Also, browsing the internet discussion and e.g. ubuntu/gentoo pages, I
found lot of issues that may arise with AIGXL - e.g. slow firefox
scrolling etc. Definitely, the Xorg with AIGLX causes some people to not
be able to set some resolution. There are none of those mentioned on
fedoraproject AIGLX pages.
As those pages are main source people get when asking goolge etc. about
aiglx, it would be nice if anybody WHO KNOWS (I am not the one) what the
status really is, updates those pages.
Similar applies for FC6t.. there is too big mist around this feature that
is so interesting for desktop users. And I think it's pity.

DVD-Rom: DMA is disabled
by Robert M. Albrecht
Hi,
while testing a dvd with mplayer, I noticed, that mplayer is dropping
frames and the cpu-scaling is glued to the maximum of 1.73GHz.
I think the problem is the disabled dma for the dvd-drive:
[root@helios ~]# hdparm -d /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
using_dma = 0 (off)
But I can't enable it:
[root@helios ~]# hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)
After some playing with hdparm
hdparm -c3 -u1 -a64 -k1 /dev/hdc
seems to improve the situation a lot. The cpu comes down to 800 Mhz and
no frame are dropped.
But the canoncial solution would be to enable DMA ? Has anyone an idea
where the problem lies ?
The hardware:
[root@helios etc]# dmesg | grep hd
hdc: UJDA750 DVD/CDRW, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache
hdc: CHECK for good STATUS
hdc: CHECK for good STATUS
[root@helios etc]# lspci | grep Intel

Minor Screensaver Problem
by Bob Agel
This certainly falls short of critical and cannot be faithfully
duplicated so a bugzilla is not in order, however I've found that
sometime this week my screensaver has developed an annoying habit of
suddenly starting in the middle of an active project. Moving the mouse
or typing will immediately revert back to normal, however this does
happen several times per day. Any things I might look at for a
correction?

Firefox & Flash
by CodeHeads
Hello all,
I have a problem. I am running FC6 T2 with all the updates.
I installed macromedia flash through the browser when it asked me.
Now, when I bring up a page that has macromedia flash in the page
Firefox crashes (Closes).
Is anyone else having this problem??
Thanks,
Will

Logwatch report issue
by Anne Wilson
It's been a long struggle to get the logwatch reports to be mailed to myself,
with much more file editing than I remember having to do on the FC4 boxes.
Now the report emails go out to root and get delivered into my own mail - so
far so good. The problem is that my filter fails, because the messages say
that they come from logwatch(a)localhost.localdomain instead of
hostname.domain.tld.
/usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf appears to be the same as on
this FC4 box, where the messages are correctly identified. Postfix.sendmail
is doing its part, delivering correctly, so I don't think it's there. Which
other file should I be checking?

Enabling compiz
by Jay Cliburn
I'd like to try out compiz, but every time I start it, I lose window
decorations and basic window manager functionality. A thread over in
fedora-devel suggested enabling dri, but I think it's already enabled on
my system. From xorg.conf,
Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "fbdevhw"
Load "glx"
Load "record"
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
Load "dri"
EndSection
[...]
Section "DRI"
Group 0
Mode 0666
EndSection
I'm using an Nvidia FX5200 AGP video adapter with the nv driver.
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nv"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
EndSection
Ideas?
Thanks,
