what is with all the i386 packages on x86_64 install?
by Tom Horsley
I was finally, after a couple of days of trying
able to update my x86_64 FC6t2 installation, but
only after doing:
rpm -e nautilus-2.15.4-3.i386 nautilus-cd-burner-2.15.4-3.i386
control-center-2.15.4-6.i386 totem-1.5.91-2.fc6.i386
gnome-media-2.14.2-6.i386
I kept getting messages about nautilus-2.15.4-3 depending on
files that would be updated by the new x86_64 nautilus
the update was trying to install (but there was no new
i386 nautilus to go along with it).
Why on earth would things like nautilus and totem and
control center need or want i386 versions on an x86_64
system? I can see needing i386 libraries, but these
things aren't libraries, they are utility programs.
I didn't do anything special to ask for all this i386 stuff.
I just installed from the DVD and selected everything
except all the extra language packages, then tried to
update the system, and got errors with all these conflicting
i386 packages (and there are a lot more where the ones above
came from, those are just the one I had to remove to get
through the update).
I know there is some undocumented mystic secret handshake
that goes on underneath the covers in the rpm stuff somewhere
that is supposed to make i386 and x86_64 conflicts "just
work", but clearly, for updates, it doesn't "just work" if
the repos aren't consistent, and the more i386 stuff there
is, the bigger chance the repos won't be consistent. In fact,
the odds of doing an update at a moment in time when the
repos are consistent approach zero :-(.

Install report 2006-08-17
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
The rawhid snapshot for the day (2006-08-17) is installable and has only a few glitches.
After firstboot, the X server refuses to die since there are two X servers running.
One is a testing server (deduced form a -config test* parameter in ps display) and
the other is from gdm. One has to kill both X servers from a remote login to get the
system to continue its normal operation.
gnome-display-properties only offers 640x and 800x resolutions until the initial X
server exits.
system-config-display won't generate a dual-head configuration due to an IndexError
(out-of-bounds) error - bugzilla 203041 filed against s-c-d
I still can't figure out how to get a non-anonymous FTP repository configured in the
extra repositories during software selection. HTTP is easy, but some large packages
tend to time-out and freeze the install. BZ 203044 filed against anaconda.

yes Michal,
You were right. Somehow yesterday pup got through my firewall.
But it does not today, whatever I do with write permission on /etc/profile/
Maybe something happened to the firewall machine.
I finally see that I have to set the proxy settings directly in /etc/yum.conf.
Wow, thats really is desktop integration!

bcm43xx wifi on a Dell Inspiron 8600
by Steven Haigh
Hi guys,
I've got a bit of an issue getting the bcm43xx card in my Dell
Inspiron laptop going, and I'm not sure if its a bug or something I've
done wrong... It used to work fine using ndiswrapper, however I'm
trying to give the kernel module a go.
The module loads ok, and I've extracted a couple of different firmware
versions with bcm43xx-fwcutter (3.100.46.0 & 3.94.41.1) and put the
files in /lib/firmware.
Whenever I use NetworkManager to try to connect to an AP, I get the
following in /var/log/messages
10:24:03 NetworkManager: <information> User Switch:

Now the command 'SET_NETWORK 0 ssid 4e6f64655f414143' interests me, as
I would have thought that would have been the SSID of the AP - in this
case "Node_AAC". This being said however, I can seem to scan for APs
using iwlist and get:
# iwlist eth1 scanning
eth1 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 00:12:17:E3:DF:60
ESSID:"Node_AAC"

48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
Quality=100/100 Signal level=-156 dBm
Extra: Last beacon: 376ms ago
If I try to configure the card manually using:
# iwconfig eth1 mode managed essid Node_AAC channel 1 enc off ap auto
then I get this in /var/log/messages:

Has anyone managed to get these cards working? I'm using kernel

Thanks...

Still Compiling on FC6T2
by William Murray
Hi guys,
I watched all the discussion about FC6T2 at the weekend,
but it did not seem to apply to me yet. I am stuck (with the latest CVS)
at:
/usr/local/src/openafs-snap-2006-08-14/src/libafs/MODLOAD-2.6.17-1.2564.fc6-MP/rx.c:2397:
error: implicit declaration of function ‘IN6_IS_ADDR_V4COMPAT’
I don't understand where the in3t6 definitions are supposed to come
from: there
arer no results for
find /usr -name inet\*
or
find /usr -name netinet\*
on my system.
Does anyone know what happened here?
Thanks,
Bill
