[gsoc12] Implement a big screen dashboard for RHQ
by manu [ranga]
I am interested in $subject idea and currency preparing a proposal.
background:
During my last year's internship at WSO2[1] I did a somewhat similar
project. it allows the users to generate dashboards containing various
types of visualizations. Data is pulled via Ajax and graphs are updated
dynamically. Users can configure types, size and placement of graphs.
It’s integrated to WSO2 BAM 2 alpha [2] release so far. I have a very
good grasp on javascript, java and interested in data visualization.
Requirement as I understood it:
1. User select "create new dashboard"
2. A wizard will guide the user through visualization configuration steps.
3. It will let user to select data source (metric), size, type, color,
positioning etc.
4. Dashboard war will be published and user will receive a URL to access it.
I would appreciate if you can clarify some of the following questions:
1. It this implementing going to be independent of the GWT base
visualizations currently exists.
2. Should users be allowed to change/edit already created dashboard?
3. is there any required function points I missed?
thank you.

[GSoC-2012] Implement a RHQ storage backend using Infinispan
by Kostya Lutovich
Hello!
My name is Konstantin Lutovich.
I'm a student from ukrainian national university of Kyiv. Got bs degree
last year and now studying to get the master one.
I liked the idea of implementing RHQ storage backend using Infinispan and
want to contribute it as a GSoC project.
Now I would like to get familiar with RHQ and Infinispan because I have not
used them before.
For now I've build RHQ, looked a bit through the confluence and source and
started with some quickstarts on Infinispan.
Now I am going to continue working with documentation. Would like to ask
what modules of RHQ should I look at for now?
Any suggestions are highly appreciated :)
Thank you!

new AS7 itest: GenericJBossAS7PluginTest.testAllMetricsHaveNonNullValues()
by Ian Springer
I added a new AS7 itest that attempts to collect all defined numeric
metrics and traits for every discovered Resource. It then asserts that
all metrics return non-null values. The test is currently failing with
the following results:
testAllMetricsHaveNonNullValues(org.rhq.modules.plugins.jbossas7.itest.GenericJBossAS7PluginTest):
Metrics with null values by type: {
ResourceType[id=0, name=DataSource, plugin=jboss-as-7,
category=Service]=[PreparedStatementCacheCurrentSize,
PreparedStatementCacheMissCount, PreparedStatementCacheAddCount,
PreparedStatementCacheAccessCount, PreparedStatementCacheDeleteCount,
PreparedStatementCacheHitCount, AverageBlockingTime, ActiveCount,
CreatedCount, MaxCreationTime, TotalCreationTime, AvailableCount,
MaxUsedCount, TotalBlockingTime, AverageCreationTime, DestroyedCount],
ResourceType[id=0, name=Managed Server, plugin=jboss-as-7,
category=Server]=[startTime],
ResourceType[id=0, name=Transactions Subsystem, plugin=jboss-as-7,
category=Service]=[number-of-nested-transactions,
number-of-timed-out-transactions, number-of-committed-transactions,
number-of-transactions, number-of-heuristics,
number-of-aborted-transactions, number-of-inflight-transactions,
number-of-application-rollbacks, number-of-resource-rollbacks]
}
expected:<true> but was:<false>
Note, the metrics with null values are grouped by ResourceType.

[GSOC-2012] Implement a Forge plugin to create RHQ plugins - idea
by Shameera Rathnayaka
Hi devs,
(I discussed this idea in the irc channel yesterday and would like to
present it here.)
I am an undergraduate student from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. I
would like
to apply for GSOC 2012 with jboss community. Therefore I first went through
the ideas list[1]
published in the site and I am interested in contributing to "Implement a
Forge
plugin to create RHQ plugins" project. I already have chatted through the
irc channel
#rhq, and from that i could get a good introduction to Forge and RHQ
projects. However
as I haven't used them earlier can you please tell me what are the
technologies/frameworks
which i need to know in prior to involving in this project? I will use
this time to getting familiar
with them?.
I am very familiar with java as a programming language and have done many
projects with
it during my academic and internship period. I was able to successfully set
up forge in my
computer and I am currently reading the resources[2][3] provided withing
the above discussion.
I hope to research further about this to write a proposal for this proposed
idea.
It would be very helpful if you can provide me some advice on from where
should i start, what
are the things to be familiar with first etc.
Thank you very much!

[BZ 808231] add support for tracking the lifecycle state of the plugin container and its container services
by Ian Springer
I've attached a patch to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808231 that implements this
enhancement. There are two parts to the patch:
1) the new support for service lifecycle
a) added ContainerServiceState enum with 4 values:
INITIALIZING,
INITIALIZED,
SHUTTING_DOWN,
SHUT_DOWN
b) added "ContainerServiceState getState()" method to
ContainerService interface
c) added two new service base classes, AgentContainerService and
NonAgentContainerService, to implement common functionality
(specifically, i) this.configuration and this.state fields and
associated accessors, and ii) state-aware impls of initialize() and
shutdown()), and refactored all services to extend one of these classes
and
2) checking if a service is being shutdown in certain key locations, and
if it is, aborting further code that will likely throw exceptions due to
the service not being in an initialized state, .e.g. from
AutoDiscoveryExecutor.call():
} catch (Exception e) {
if (inventoryManager.getState() ==
ContainerServiceState.INITIALIZED) {
log.warn("Exception caught while executing server
discovery scan.", e);
report.addError(new ExceptionPackage(Severity.Warning, e));
}
}
Please review the patch and let me know if you see any potential issues.
I've been running with it for a few days and have seen no issues. I
would like to get it committed some time this week, so others working on
the AS7 plugin can benefit from the much-reduced log noise during
execution of the AS7 plugin integration tests.
