Bug ID: 1761236 Summary: Review Request: festival - Speech synthesis and text-to-speech system Product: Fedora Version: rawhide Hardware: All OS: Linux Status: NEW Component: Package Review Severity: medium Priority: medium Assignee: nobody@fedoraproject.org Reporter: mike@flyn.org QA Contact: extras-qa@fedoraproject.org CC: package-review@lists.fedoraproject.org Target Milestone: --- Classification: Fedora
SRPM: https://www.flyn.org/SRPMS/festival-2.5.0-7.fc29.src.rpm Spec: https://www.flyn.org/SRPMS/festival.spec Description: Speech synthesis and text-to-speech system Fedora Account System Username: mikep
Festival was recently retired:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1674883
I had already been working on updating the Festival package to a much newer version:

--- Comment #1 from W. Michael Petullo mike@flyn.org --- *** Bug 1761235 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |zebob.m@gmail.com
--- Comment #3 from Robert-André Mauchin zebob.m@gmail.com --- - Only one of this is necessary:
Requires: festival-lib = %{version}-%{release} Requires: festival-lib
- Use %make_build instead of make
- Just simplify this into %{_datadir}/festival, we don't need to be so specific
%dir %{_datadir}/festival %{_datadir}/festival/*.scm %{_datadir}/festival/festival.el %{_datadir}/festival/*.ent %{_datadir}/festival/*.gram %{_datadir}/festival/*.dtd %{_datadir}/festival/*.ngrambin %{_datadir}/festival/speech.properties %{_datadir}/festival/dicts %dir %{_datadir}/festival/multisyn %{_datadir}/festival/multisyn/*.scm %dir %{_datadir}/festival/examples %{_datadir}/festival/examples/intro.text
Same for %{_libexecdir}/festival
- use install -p to keep timestamps
- I don't get the need for the lib package?
%files lib %license COPYING
There's nothing in it?
- Why is this provided? There's no conf file to go along?
# the actual /etc. :) mkdir -p $RPM_BUILD_ROOT%{_sysconfdir}/festival
- Same. Why create this if you don't provide info files?
# info pages mkdir -p $RPM_BUILD_ROOT%{_infodir}
These is a Makefile in doc/ to create Info and man pages
- Maybe snag some interesting patches from Debian? https://packages.debian.org/sid/festival
- Build does not respect Fedora build flags. You're missing a \ after thi libdir line:
make \ EST=%{_libdir}/speech_tools \ LIBDIR="%{_libdir}" \ CFLAGS="$RPM_OPT_FLAGS -fPIC" \ CXXFLAGS="$RPM_OPT_FLAGS -fPIC"
Probably could remove after that:
# This seems to avoid malfunction # "error: Empty %files file /home/mike/Source/rpms/BUILD/festival/debugsourcefiles.list" %global debug_package %{nil}
- Package can't be installed:
DEBUG util.py:595: Problem: conflicting requests DEBUG util.py:595: - nothing provides festival-lib = 0.19990610-7.fc32 needed by festival-devel-2.5.0-7.fc32.x86_64
Version is redefined by Version: %{diphoneversion} so this fails.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1761236
--- Comment #4 from W. Michael Petullo mike@flyn.org --- SRPM: https://www.flyn.org/SRPMS/festival-2.5.0-8.fc30.src.rpm Spec: https://www.flyn.org/SRPMS/festival.spec Description: Speech synthesis and text-to-speech system Fedora Account System Username: mikep
- Remove empty lib subpackage - Fix make command line (add missing '') - Use -p with install - Do not create %{_sysconfdir}/festival - Do not create %{_infodir} - Simplify %files
Using %make_build broke Festival's build system, which is fragile and largely custom-written.

--- Comment #5 from Robert-André Mauchin zebob.m@gmail.com --- [!]: Large data in /usr/share should live in a noarch subpackage if package is arched. Note: Arch-ed rpms have a total of 473026560 bytes in /usr/share festival-2.5.0-8.fc32.x86_64.rpm:473016320 See:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ReviewGuidelines#Package_Review_Gui...
Make a noarch subpackage containing datadir elements
- Add a Provides festival-static in the -devel subpackage:
Static libraries in -static or -devel subpackage, providing -devel if present. Note: Package has .a files: festival-devel. Does not provide -static: festival-devel. See: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging- guidelines/#packaging-static-libraries
- Include COPYING.kal_diphone within %license:
If (and only if) the source package includes the text of the license(s) in its own file, then that file, containing the text of the license(s) for the package is included in %license. Note: License file COPYING.kal_diphone is not marked as %license See: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging- guidelines/LicensingGuidelines/#_license_text
i.e. this should be %license not %doc:
%files -n festvox-kal-diphone %doc COPYING.kal_diphone %dir %{_datadir}/festival/voices %dir %{_datadir}/festival/voices/english %{_datadir}/festival/voices/english/kal_diphone
%files -n festvox-rab-diphone %doc COPYING.rab_diphone %dir %{_datadir}/festival/voices %dir %{_datadir}/festival/voices/english %{_datadir}/festival/voices/english/rab_diphone
Those are BSD.
- There's some BSD code too:
BSD 3-clause "New" or "Revised" License --------------------------------------- festival/src/modules/hts_engine/COPYING festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_audio.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_engine.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_engine.h festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_gstream.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_hidden.h festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_label.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_misc.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_model.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_pstream.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_sstream.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/HTS_vocoder.c festival/src/modules/hts_engine/Makefile festival/src/modules/hts_engine/README festival/src/modules/hts_engine/fest2hts_engine.cc
Include it within the license field and add a comment explaining the license breakdown.

- Remove empty lib subpackage - Note BSD license for hts_engine module - Split data into noarch package - The festival-devel package now provides festival-static - Markup additional files as licenses
Package name exists because this request aims to unorphan the festival package.
