please feel free to assign it as cairo or freetype problem as appropriate. Since removing .fonts.conf (and switching between Droid and WQY) produces bad results from a clean account with headless xvfb-run, I assume this is a system-wide problem not due to customization; I suspect the problem is probably somewhere between cairo and freetype.
Sorry I don't have a simplier non-R way of showing the same problem - pango-view seems to do okay/correct.
Also the CairoFont-?-? font names were never seen under F17.
