plot thickens... so 64-bit cairo also suffers occasionally.

Yes, I see from grep'ing through the code - it was the first difference I noticed from the upgrade... related but somewhat a red-herring.

R's X11 display is also somewhat cairo-based - and the display is correct; I think it doesn't affect bitmap devices.

One possibility crossed my mind is the font-writing part of cairo (and bad-interaction with freetype emulated fonts). Hence I wrote to Werner (of freetype) of both correctly embolden output & wrong ouput and asked if he could tell how and in what way the glyph data is corrected. fontforge could work now that we know the PS output is also broken, and a "reproducible" way of breaking it...
