In pango 1.44, pango switch to use harfbuzz and dropped Adobe Type 1 font
support.
We suggest to use makeotf from Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType
to convert the PostScript fonts to OpenType fonts.
URL: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1809918
Before that, maybe you could try to use makeotf to convert the fonts,
and install the fonts into ~/.local/share/fonts/ .
Maybe the above conversion can make the Degree sign work again.

Exactly, it's enough to type some text in the widget used for writing messages
to be sent.
And it seems to happen with text containing words too long for the widget, like
there's a bug with the wrapping code.

Ah yes, that is the result of the changes I made to fix the upgrade path from
F31 to F32, that will break the upgrade path for people who were running the
old unfixed F32 version, see comment 31 for details.
Unfortunately I cannot fix both upgrade paths and since F32 is not yet released
I believe that the upgrade path from F31 -> F32 is the important one to get
right.
To workaround this on F32 beta do:
sudo rpm -e widelands
sudo dnf install widelands

Commit hash is used when upstream has not tagged a release with a tag that
derives from version, in a common way (common not standard, because Linus sucks
at versioning, and could not bother with a version reference in git with
machine-readable structure)
When tag exists, but does not follow conventions, you have to declare it
explicitly (convention is v%{version} for github and %{version} for everyone
else)
When there is no tag to rely on you need an explicit commit ID

Well, it seems upstream lost some changes. Not surprising when you consider a
VCS optional. You can point them to the archive you used before, in case they
manage to salvage it. Else, it would be nice if they released 1.003
Otherwise, yes, Epoch applies, typical example of interrupted history with a
versionning break in the middle

--- Comment #1 from Giorgio Comai <g(a)giorgiocomai.eu> ---
Move to 'pango', as this seems to be a regression.
The issue does not appear if pango is downgraded w.g. with - sudo dnf downgrade
--releasever 30 pango-1.43.0-4.fc30.x86_64
The reason may be as detailed in this SO answer:
> pango was upgraded to 1.44, which affects bitmap fonts like the default R-Studio font due to the switch from Freetype to HarfBuzz
https://stackoverflow.com/a/60733863/4124601
Either way, if this prevents all R users on Fedora from having symbols in
default graphics, it would be great to have it solved at the package level.
