Description of problem:
we recently found some issues in F19 DVD media where gnu-free-fonts when
removed fallback comes to smc-meera-fonts but it failed to render I guess so
lohit-malayalam-fonts package added into kickstart. See bug 977764.
Then we found that Malayalam language Orthography coverage is FULL for
FreeSerif.ttf and Lohit-Malayalam.ttf
but Meera.ttf is not having complete coverage. See
"missingValues":"U+0d44 (ൄ), U+0d62 (ൢ), U+0d63 (ൣ), U+0d70 (൰), U+0d71 (൱),

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.

Actual results:
Meera is defualt with 90% coverage
Expected results:
should have Lohit Malayalam as a default as it covers 100% glyphs.

Description of problem:
Unable to activate IBus after a clean install and initial update. A truncated
error message (text below) appears in the top-right corner everytime 'Use IBus'
is selected. I was able to fix this by doing 'yum install ibus-setup'.
Afterwards the error messages no longer appears.
This was done with a clean install of F19-mate-beta, then 'yum update'.
How reproducible:
Via 'Input Method Selector' click on 'Use IBus'.
Actual results:
An error message appears complaining about a processing dying too many times.
Expected results:
Nothing. Historically a restart is needed to enable ibus.
Additional info:
I discovered the workaround by clicking on 'Preferences' next to 'Use IBus' in
the Input Method Selector. This action gives a much more helpful error message
regarding the missing ibus-setup.
This is the error message. The title is truncated. The environment variable
doesn't exist so the user has no way of locating the path.
"Unable to keep Input Method runni"
"Giving up to bring the process up because main
Input Method process for IBus rapidly died many
times. See $XDG_CACHE_HOME/imsettings/log for
more details."

I'm trying to add the input method that allows outputting actual pinyin, latin
characters with tone marks(má,mǎ,mà,etc). This essentially describes what I'm
trying to do.
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=290382
In previous versions of Fedora this input method exists in ibus-m17n. With F19
under Chinese I only see 3 options:

Summary: IBus doesn't pass key events to the engines after
alt-tab
Product: Fedora
Version: rawhide
Component: ibus
Severity: unspecified
Priority: unspecified
Reporter: bochecha(a)fedoraproject.org
Description of problem:
1. Open a gedit window and a thunderbird window
2. In the gedit window, type something with an IBus engine (tested with «
Intelligent Pinyin » and « Cangjie »), you get e.g Chinese characters
3. Switch to the Thunderbird window with alt-tab, then back to the gedit window
with alt-tab again
4. Type something => latin letters appear instead of the result of the input
method engine
If you get Chinese characters in 4, insist a bit: alt-tab to Thunderbird again,
then alt-tab back to gedit, and type. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but
quite frequently, so ifyou repeat enough it's going to happen sooner or later.
Also, I found that it happens with other apps too, but not all (I reproduced it
with Firefox and Xchat at least). However, Thunderbird lets me reproduce the
issue the most frequently.
I added some debugging in the do_process_key_event method of ibus-cangjie when
I discovered the bug. When the bug happens, the do_process_key_event method is
not even called.
So in these cases, IBus doesn't pass the key events to the engine any more.

Note:- system-config-language is not completely broken. I see requests since
last two months where people are just interested to set the locale using
system-config-language and i have tested this and its working fine.
I used MATE and system-config-language also and I see language is set correctly
though UI shows group does not exists message. When you ask
system-config-language to set some language it does this two things. First to
check for packages if available to install and also set the locale.
So, overall for such users who just want to set locale and no extra packages to
be installed for them, system-config-language is working in any desktop
environment.

--- Comment #19 from markzzzsmith(a)yahoo.com.au ---
Hmm. I'm using XFCE, and I don't think there is a way to set locale within
XFCE. I wasn't aware that it can be changed in Gnome, and as the Anaconda
installer seemed to be taking care of those sorts of settings (e.g., keyboard,
timezone), thought that that must be where people are setting it, and if it
isn't correct, people were just accepting not quite right spell check
dictionaries, or errors like PC Load Letter.
If system-config-language is now broken, what is the alternative? When I
originally went looking to fix this issue I went looking for a file in /etc/
that specified the locale, but couldn't find one. From memory I think I
initially resolved it using a grub kernel command line option, however that is
a pretty big hammer to solve this sort of problem, and I thought it should be
easier than that. Once I found system-config-language, I used that instead and
it has worked for me.

See attached video.
The problem is, that characters are removed inconsistently from the
input buffer and the transliterated string in the preëdit. I.e. the
3 times BACKSPACE removed the “rün” from the preëdit, but “u"n”
was removed from the typed chars, leaving “gr” in the list of typed
chars. Then, when typing the final “a”, the “r” from the list of
typed chars comes back into the preëdit.
Leads to very confusing and inconsistent behaviour which depends on
length differences in the input and the transliteration.
On top of that, there is code for handling arrow left, arrow right,
delete, control arrow left, ... but all these do nothing useful
currently in the preëdit, some of them just cause error messages to
appear in the debug log file.

I'm happy enough with it being dealt with properly in a future release of
Fedora. However, would it be possible to have the system-config-language
package installed by default in F19 to at least make changing the locale
significantly easier? If people go looking for a utility to change the locale,
and system-config-language is installed, I think they'll guess that this is how
they change it.

well, like I mentioned, the AU locale is clearly a top-down fork of the UK
locale ;), so that would be the obvious one to choose when AU isn't available.
But probably not worth bikeshedding this further.

That is one. (The "PC (Print Cartridge) Load Letter" error message was common
here on HP printers, because you had A4 paper in the printer, but the PC
sending a print job to it was set to Letter due to a US locale. It actually
doesn't make sense that it occurs in the Office Space movie, unless that was
set in Canada or similar rather than the US. In short, I've known WTF "PC Load
Letter" means for a long time.)
Metric instead of imperial units of measurement.
I was taught in primary school that we use space as thousands separators rather
than a comma.
Having the incorrect spell check dictionaries is one of the most obvious
differences when using a US locale. 'colour' vs 'color', 'neighbour' vs
'neighbor', and all the 's' vs 'z's e.g. 'initialise' vs 'initialize'.

Discussed at 2013-06-12 freeze exception review meeting:
http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-blocker-review/2013-06-12/f19final-…
. Agreed this is rejected as a freeze exception: given the way F19 does locale
selection - it's directly tied to translation availability - there isn't a
small, simple fix here, we can't just 'add' AU somehow. Any change that fixes
this would necessarily be a larger scale revamp of how locale selection
actually works, per comment #11. So it's not appropriate for a freeze
exception, it's more F20 stuff.

For Fedora 20 I'm planning to come up with locale selection for the Anaconda,
but I'm not going to do such major changes in this phase of F19. Using timezone
is not a generally working solution (think about timezones like US/Central
etc.).

FWIW, it's fairly easy to change this after install in GNOME; just go to the
Region & Language control center applet (you can launch it directly by opening
the overview and searching for 'regio'), and you can set Language and Formats
there. English (Australia) shows after you expand the list one time (it only
shows very common locales at first, click the three dots in a vertical line to
expand the list). If you have only one user with admin privileges, this setting
should then be applied systemwide. If you have more than one user, or your user
doesn't have admin privileges, you can set the systemwide locale via the "Login
Screen" button.
Out of interest, is there something specific you stand to gain by having the
locale set correctly, or is it just a desire to have it correct? I'm in Canada,
but I usually just keep the en(US) locale, it's close enough in all practical
respects.

I know of at least one person who thinks it should be resolved - his name is in

"a practically usable solution"
Use the selected timezone as an indication of locale. Most of the time it will
be correct. If the selected timezone doesn't match the install translation,
present a list of locales to select from after the timezone has been selected.

As long as there is no English (Australian) [en_AU] translation, the language
won't appear in the first screen. I'm closing this as CANTFIX. If anybody
things this should be resolved and will suggest a practically usable solution,
feel free to reopen this bug.

Okay that is a bug then :)
I think the problem is that there is no en_AU translation for anaconda
and that then leads you into this twisty path of locales and timezones.
Anaconda team: can something be done to add en_AU to

The only way to get en_AU is to select it! :)
Your step (1) decides the locale not the timezone.
It would be nice if we could decouple language and region
from locales but that is not how glibc locales work alas.
Second related problem is getting en_AU to fallback to en_GB translations
rather than en_US.

Hi,
Just tried out Fedora 19 (XFCE) Beta, I still didn't end up with an Australian
locale after installation.
Firstly, I tried an English (United Kingdom) installation, as English UK is the
spelling we use.
1. Selected English (United Kingdom) as installation language
2. Did not select keyboard layout checkbox to match installation language, as
Australia uses US layout
3. Selected Australia/Melbourne as timezone
4. Did install.
5. Locale set to en_GB, not en_AU
Secondly, I tried the English (US) installation, as I suspect it would be
common for Australian installs to accept the default.
1. Used default English (United States) as installation language
2. Selected Set keybaord to default layout for selected language, as Australia
uses US keyboard layout.
3. Selected Australia/Melbourne as timezone
4. Performed installation.
5. Local set to en_US, not en_AU

Summary: Handling the harfbuzz / harfbuzz-icu split

I have two suggestions for the harfbuzz / harfbuzz-icu split.
1) Don't do separate -devel packages, only library packages
It's uncommon in Fedora to have multiple -devel subpackages. In most packages
that split up shared libraries into separate subpackages, all the headers still
go in a single -devel package.
This would simplify packaging in both harfbuzz and consumers.
(It's fine to keep it split up as well if there's a reason for that, just
wanted to point out that it's an uncommon thing to do.)
2) 'undefined symbol: hb_icu_script_to_script' issues
It's an ABI break and needs some care to avoid breaking user systems. Before
submitting the harfbuzz 0.9.18 update again, all the consumers should be
rebuilt with the new harfbuzz (most will need patching) and submit them as a
single Bodhi ticket, together with the harfbuzz 0.9.18 build.
So far I know of libreoffice and webkitgtk3, but there are probably more.

I had a quick play with fonts-tweak-tool - here are some suggestions:
- Set a window title - currently, it just has 'fonts-tweak-tool', which is not
great.
- Same goes for the dialogs.
- Inline toolbars. The +/- buttons below your lists would look much nicer if
they had the same appearance as the 'inline toolbars' in the control-center.
This is a little fiddly to set up; I am happy to assist with that - or ask
Cosimo.
- The lists should not change their width depending on their content - better
to make them wide enough and ellipsize overly wide items.
- Section headings need have some more padding above them
- Font Aliases:
- Should not have a . in the checkbox labels
- The combo boxes are too dominant; should not stretch them all across
- Bad baseline alignment between the "Sample:" label and the sample text
- Font Properties:
- Drop the 'the' in 'Use the sub-pixel rendering'
- The spacing of the three options in the Hinting section is not even

This isn't a pango bug at all, we just need to change the font for Amharic in
the installation image. xorg-x11-fonts-ethiopic isn't suitable according to the
above comments, we should change to sil-abyssinica-fonts at least - we can
change it later if Amharic people in Fedora community isn't comfortable with
it. that would be better than broken font anyway. reassigning to lorax.

Description of problem:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#PIE says that "you MUST
enable the PIE compiler flags if your package is long running ...".
However, currently ebnetd is not being built with PIE flags. This is a
clear violation of the packaging guidelines.
This issue (in its wider scope) is being discussed at,

Verified in GNOME 3.8 in Fedora 19.
The default key is SUPER + SPACE, which is the same as in Win8.

--- Comment #24 from Pravin Satpute <psatpute(a)redhat.com> ---
Original problem for which the bug was opened is resolved.
Regarding its regression.
i.e.
u0985 (অ) + u09C7 (ে) should not combine.
This is now allowed in all script.
Even in Devanagari
u0905 (अ) + u093f (ि) it is connecting now.
These combinations specifically allowed since there are chanced or such
sequence in comics world for exaggeration.
Related thread on Harfbuzz

So as far as i think this is not bug anymore. If it is from someones opinion it
must be debated on harfbuzz mailing list.
Vowel + Matra combination required in such cases.
Fixed in harfbuzz-0.9.12-2.fc18.x86_64
