Yaakov,
thanks for your reply :)
I am considering two projects at the moment:
1. Adding a support for web forums analysis
(with
fedoraforum.org in mind).
2. Adding a support for IRC archives analysis.
The IRC thing seems interesting, because some specific
problems arise in this case. In mail and forum archives
it is quite easy to find a beginning and an end of every
discussion. In case of IRC one has to determine the
beginning and the end of every discussion on his own.
The nature of discussions also differs. It happens more
often that IRC discussions have nothing to do with the
actual development process than it is the case for mailing
lists or forums. Anyway, it would be interesting to show
rounded stats for technical versus non-technical discussions
particularly on IRC, but also on forums and mailing lists.
A bit more technical problem is the accessibility of
IRC archives. Is there any bot on Fedora channels which
is logging the discussions?
Some questions I think IRC extension should be able to answer:
- who is the "core" of the channel's community? how many people
are considered the core?
- is the channel's community inclusive/exclusive? how often
new users are coming to stay?
- are the core members responsive? In other words: who is answering
the questions: the core members or some temporary members?
- what's the relation between questions asked and questions answered?
- what's the relation between sentences produced by core members
and temporary members?
- what's the relation between technical/non-technical discussions?
- ...? :)
The 'web forums' project is a bit different by its nature. I think
that it should be implemented similarly to the way mailing-lists
analysis work, so later on it is possible to add new features
for web forums and mailing lists at the same time (and adding such
features should become a part of my GSoC project as well).
I also have some other ideas but these two are the ones which should
constitute a good GSoC project and I feel quite comfortable about each
of them. The question is: which project is more interesting from
your perspective? And if none of these two is, please let me know and
then I will come with some new proposals :-)
