One can only thank those like Fargo, as more people become aware of options other than Microsoft when it comes to personal computing -- if this is the 75+ year old you mentioned earlier then welcome to the oldies club, my mother is getting closer to 80s and has been on Fedora for the past 3 years with no glitches. Of course, she often gets questions from her peers on what Fedora is, but she's now able to explain it :)

Just curious, did you try changing the browser user agent in Vista?
I have done this before (you have to include the js user switcher too as most sites have wised up to the regular user agent).
But, I did not do this on a banking site as I did not want to get sued. I do PCI (credit card security), among other things, and do not want to open myself up to that kind of liability. Most of PCI is a paper chase to deflect liability, so I get a load of it. If you really wanted to improve security on point of sale machines, you'd forbid the use of Windows and required SE Linux enabled programs. But ...
