Hi Al!
Thank you very much for the great feedback!
I agree that we could certainly benefit from adding more instruction in
terms of how to use the tags and will incorporate that into the Wiki.
Regards,
Garland

Milestones for next phase of web redesign (main page)
by Paul W. Frields
Our web redesign project has continued to move forward in a phased
approach. Before Fedora 12 release, the spins.fp.o pages were also
completely redesigned and implemented to provide spin owners a better
way to market and promote their spins. Now, before Fedora 13 release,
we're well on our way to completing the last bits of the get.fp.o
pages that were redesigned, providing a clearer way for people to
download the default image.
The next phase of the current redesign process is to revamp the front
page (the main fedoraproject.org page) to be more informative and
welcoming for a wider audience. In the Board's public meeting last
Thursday we had a conversation with the Websites team and one of the
actions I took on was to start talking with the Websites and Design
team about setting milestones for this redesign. I would hope to
complete this phase well in advance of the Alpha release of Fedora 14,
which would help us avoid crunching up too much workload into the last
phase of our release cycle, and allow everyone to concentrate on other
pieces of the release.
I want to invite members of the Design and Websites team who want to
work on this next phase to, first, look at the work that Mo Duffy has
already done for mockups, and second, think about the tasks we need to
complete to make those mockups into reality.
* Are there any widgets or supporting scripts that need to be
completed first?
* Who can we get to create the photos and other collateral to populate
the front page?
* Any tweaks we want to make to the design to address open issues?
Then we can set some dates for completion and make this part of a
regular meeting agenda. I think it makes sense to coordinate this
work on the websites@ list, so I'm setting that reply-to. Anyone
interested in helping with further refinements, and HTML, CSS, and
JavaScript work, can sign up for the websites list here:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/websites
I'd like to arrive at a schedule by the first Websites meeting *after*
F13 GA, which is approximately 10 days from now if I remember the
meeting schedule correctly.

Hi Garland,
Thanks for posting this to the open mailing list.
A couple of suggestions.
Firstly the importance of <title></title> and <meta name="description" content="short summary with key phrase"> tags. Search engines present the title as the link on the search results to the found page. Often key terms searched for will be highlighted in the title. Also the main search engines (Google, Yahoo) will use the meta description for the short description below the link.
To help simplify SEO for authors I think you should emphasise title, h1 and h2 tags, along with meta description as the primary places to enter key phrases. Anything else is likely to be much less important in any page rankings.
So for example https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_Live_USB might be best served with:
<title>Boot and Run Fedora from Live USB Media - Fedoraproject</title>
<h1>Fedora</h1>
<h2>Boot and Run Fedora from Live USB Media</h2>
then optionally have
<meta name="description" content="Step by step guide on how to boot and run Fedora from USB Media">
A clear example in your document may help authors understand more quickly how to approach this.
For a nice history on how all the other meta stuff is ignored see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_element
Secondly as a source of keywords using the wiki search may be more productive of a broader range of keywords.
The awstats page shows the word fedora as very much the most common keyword, with supplemental words such as usb, schedule, screenshots, release, selinux coming much further down. There seems to be no results for more general terms such as 'linux distribution' or more specific queries such as 'fedora video driver bug'.
I had proposed adding the wiki search box to the Fedora front page:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/websites/2010-April/007831.html
Hopefully this would give a source of more detailed keywords that users and contributors were looking to have answers to and allow for greater optimisation of the websites.
I personally like some of the arguments put forward by Jakob Nielsen for having search on the front page:
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20010513.html
This was part of a wider proposal I had made for redesigning the information architecture of the front page:
http://astavale.co.uk/fedora_homepage/notes.html
Which focused on three types of website user who would move from New to Returner to Contributor as a way of organising the information. Please take a look if you have the time.
Hope some of this is useful to you,
Al

Is there an official Fedora Project Facebook page? I would like to
follow the Fedora Project on Facebook and so would many others.
