position in CSS background
by Karsten Wade
This is in reference to the CSS at:
http://fedoraproject.org/style.css
(cvs.fp.o:/cvs/fedora/web/static/F-7/style.css)
We're using a background image to get the arrow bullet for lists:
#nav li
{
background: url(images/arrow.png) 5px 50% no-repeat;
...
Note the 50% -- this setting breaks the layout when doing nested lists
using this (typical) structure:
<ul>
<li>foo</li>
<li>bar
<ul>
<li>baz</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
Here is what happens:
http://people.redhat.com/kwade/fedora/websites/broken-bullet.png
This is because the position on the background image is set to 50%
(half-way down the space it is backgrounding.)
XHTML doesn't even require a closing </li>, and if I remove them
entirely, the same behavior occurs. If I put the nested list outside of
the <li></li>, the list does not display as nested but rather in serial.
My fix is to use 0% for the position:
#nav li
{
- background: url(images/arrow.png) 5px 50% no-repeat;
+ background: url(images/arrow.png) 5px 0% no-repeat;
This has the effect of making the arrow sit at the top of the bounding
box for the element, which is not as pretty:
http://people.redhat.com/kwade/fedora/websites/bullet-top-bounding.png
Since getting a bullet this way (with a background image) is a bit of a
CSS hack, I think the best answer is to leave my changes to the CSS and
add a few pixels of transparency at the top of the arrow.png.
This is not crucial; I'm going to check in legal pages to a new
canonical location and am using some nested lists; if it looks funky for
a few days, that's OK. :)

<p>RED HAT, INC. RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THESE GUIDELINES
AT ANY TIME. YOU SHOULD PERIODICALLY CHECK THESE GUIDELINES TO
BE SURE THAT YOU ARE IN COMPLIANCE.</p>
<p>Red Hat, Inc. has a long and distinguished history of being
an active contributor to the open source software
community. One of the key features of open source software is
that anyone has the right to copy, modify and redistribute the
software, subject to the terms and conditions of certain
license agreements or copyright permissions, such as the GNU
General Public License. It is important to understand that,
although Red Hat allows third parties to replicate its open
source software under the GNU GPL, absent a written agreement
or other express permission it does not allow third parties to
use its trademarks. For example, absent a trademark license
from Red Hat,a party would have the right to copy, modify and
sell Red Hat's open source software, but they would have to
call it by another name. Red Hat has always been fully
supportive of open source rights with regard to copyrights and
demonstrates that support by releasing the software we develop
under open source licenses. This document is designed to
provide guidance on how the software developed and marketed
under the <? print $PROJECT_NAME; ?> may be marketed by
others, using Red Hat's <? print $TRADEMARK_NAME; ?>.</p>
<h2>A Brief Introduction To Copyright And Trademark Law As They
Relate To Software</h2>
<p>The guidelines in this document are based on United States
law. Although many countries follow the same principles
discussed below, the laws of other countries may also differ on
some points.</p>
<h2>Copyright</h2>
<p>Copyright law protects the expression of an idea.
Fedora™ consists of hundreds of software modules, some
developed by Red Hat and many developed by other members of the
open source community. Those authors hold the copyrights in the
modules or code they developed. At the same time, the combined
body of work that constitutes Fedora™ is a collective work
which has been organized by the Fedora™ Project, and the
Fedora Project holds the copyright in that collective work.
Fedora Project then permits others to copy, modify and
redistribute the collective work. To grant this permission the
Fedora Project usually uses the GNU General Public License
("GPL") version 2 and the Fedora Project's own End User License
Agreement. Although software licensed under the GPL is "open
source software," the Fedora Project retains ownership of the
copyright in its collective work. If someone violates the GPL
regarding that collective work, only the Fedora Project, as the
copyright owner and licensor of that collective work, has legal
authority to enforce the GPL against the violator. Although the
Fedora Project "owns" the collective work, in licensing it under
the GPL, the Fedora Project grants broad rights in the
collective work to others. Neither the GPL nor the Fedora
Project's End User License Agreement grant any right to use Red
Hat's trademarks in the redistribution of the collective
work.</p>

<h2>Fedora Trademark Guidelines</h2>
<h3>Basic Introduction</h3>
<p>Trademarks are used to identify the source of goods and
services in the market. Trademark law is best understood as
consumer protection law, since it enables consumers of
products to know the source of the products they purchase and
allows them to distinguish those products from the products of
other vendors. This is important in order to ensure that
consumers are not fooled into purchasing a product of one
company while believing it is a product of another
company.</p>
<p>For instance, Heinz® ketchup is a well-known brand of
ketchup. If Jones Company decided to make its own ketchup, and
was able to market it as Heinz® ketchup, Jones Company
would profit in the sale of its ketchup from the customer
goodwill established by the owner of the well-known Heinz®
brand. Although that might be good for Jones Company, it could
be bad for the consumers who purchased the Jones Company
ketchup, believing that it was Heinz® ketchup. Such
trademark use would be impermissible under applicable
law. This is true even though the Jones Company ketchup
contains exactly the same ingredients as the Heinz®
ketchup.</p>
<p>A similar situation arises with the trademarks owned by Red
Hat. Many consumers have come to trust the Red Hat®
branded products and services, and look for a Red Hat brand,
including <? print $TRADEMARK_NAME; ?> when they obtain our
open source products. As a result, consumers who obtain
products that are labeled <? print $TRADEMARK_NAME; ?> or some
close variation (see "Use of <? print $BASE_NAME; ?>
Trademark") believe that they are the official products of the
<? print $PROJECT_NAME; ?>. Consumers often expect that such
products will contain features that are available only from
the <? print $PROJECT_NAME; ?>. In order to protect consumers,
Red Hat has an obligation to ensure that its trademarks are
not used to identify the products of other companies or used
in any other manner which states or implies an association or
sponsorship by Red Hat of other companies' products.</p>

<h1>Fedora Trademark Guidelines</h1>
<h2>Protection of Trademarks</h2>
<p>Under trademark law, owners of trademarks who use their
trademarks improperly or who fail to police the use of their
trademarks by others may lose their rights in those
trademarks. For instance, now-common words such as "zipper"
and "elevator" were trademarks at one time. Their owners
allowed the marks to be widely known and used as generic names
for the associated products, and, as a result, all trademark
protection was lost. Some examples of trademarks that are
protected by their owners at great lengths today from such
"genericide" include Kleenex® brand facial tissues,
Band-Aid® brand bandages and Xerox® brand
photocopiers. In addition to monitoring the use of trademarks
by others, policing also requires maintaining control over the
nature and quality of the goods and services that are marketed
under the trademarks.</p>
<p>Red Hat has filed to register the trademark Fedora™ in
the United States Patent and Trademark Office. We are also
seeking registration of the mark in many other countries
around the world, have filed applications to register the mark
in still other countries, and we will continue to aggressively
register our trademarks in countries where we do business.</p>
<p>Our unregistered trademarks are also protected under
trademark law. Unregistered trademarks of Red Hat include,
RPM™ and Bluecurve™.</p>

<h1>Fedora Trademark Guidelines</h1>
<h2>"Fair Use" of Trademarks</h2>
<p>Although a trademark owner should take action to police the
use of its trademarks by others, it cannot prevent others from
using its trademarks under all circumstances. For instance, a
company may refer to the trademarks of competing products in
marketing its own products. As an example, Burger King might
choose to state in advertisements that "Burger King®
french fries were preferred over McDonald's® french fries
in a taste test." Although McDonald's® is a trademark of
McDonald's Corporation, Burger King could mention it in its
marketing in this fashion so long as the statement is truthful
and not misleading, does not imply an improper association
with or sponsorship by McDonald's and otherwise complies with
applicable laws. A key element in evaluating whether the use
of someone else's trademark is acceptable is whether the use
is likely to cause confusion in the marketplace as to the
source or sponsorship of a product. Burger King's use of
"McDonald's®" in the statement above is not likely to lead
consumers to believe that Burger King® french fries are a
product of McDonald's or that Burger King® french fries
emanate from or are sponsored or approved by McDonald's
Corporation.</p>

<h1>Fedora Trademark Guidelines</h1>
<h2>Use of the Fedora Mark and Other Red Hat Trademarks Which
Are Included in Fedora</h2>
<p>One of the purposes of the Fedora Project is to make a
cutting-edge version of Linux® widely available in a
consistent format that the public can come to trust. In order
to achieve this purpose it is important that the technology
can quickly be identified and that the recipient knows the
technology they are receiving is the official and unmodified
version. Red Hat has chosen the Fedora™ mark to identify
this effort and is granting broad usage rights in that
trademark in order to assure widespread availability.</p>
<p>Companies, governments, schools or individuals who wish to
produce CD-ROM and other products that contain the software
which the Fedora Project distributes under the Fedora™
may do so as long as they follow these guidelines. Except as
expressly granted herein or under rights of fair use, no party
has a right to use the Fedora™ mark in association with
the software provided by the Fedora Project. Doing so would
cause confusion among the customers who obtain those products,
because they may believe they are obtaining a product
emanating from or sponsored by the Fedora Project but, in
reality, it is a product of another company altogether.</p>
<p>To address this issue, we have developed the following
guidelines for the use of the Fedora™ trademark and such
other Red Hat marks as are included in Fedora™. These
guidelines are designed to serve both consumers of Linux-based
products, to ensure that they know the source of the products
they purchase, and publishers of Linux-based products, so that
they can avoid improperly generating confusion in the
marketplace.</p>
<h2>Use of the Brand "Fedora"</h2>
<p>Fedora™ is a trademark of Red Hat, Inc. and may only be
used with Red Hat Inc.'s express permission. Except as
provided herein, you may not use "Fedora" or any confusingly
similar mark as a trademark for your product, or use "Fedora"
in any other manner that might cause confusion in the
marketplace, including in advertising, on auction sites, or on
software or hardware. Any party wishing to use the
Fedora™ mark may do so as long as they meet two
conditions:</p>
<ol>
<li>They must only use the Fedora™ mark in association
with the original Fedora™ code found on the Fedora
Project website (see <a
href="http://fedoraproject.org">http://fedoraproject.org</a>)
without modification; and</li>
<li>If they charge a fee for the CD-ROM or other media on
which they deliver the Fedora™ code, they warranty the
media on which the Fedora™ code is delivered, thus
ensuring that the recipient receives a usable copy.</li>
</ol>
<p>This same permission applies to such other Red Hat trademarks
as are included in the authorized Fedora™ distribution,
such as RPM™. Except as expressly stated herein, no
other rights are granted to use any other Red Hat trademarks,
specifically including the RED HAT® and "Shadowman"
logo® marks. <em>Absolutely no exceptions</em>.</p>

<h1>Fedora Trademark Guidelines and Policies</h1>
<p><strong><a href="guidelines/">Fedora Trademark
Guidelines</a></strong></p>
<p>The trademark guidelines provide general guidance on Red
Hat's policies relating to its Fedora trademark
and proper referential use of Red Hat's trademarks.</p>
<p>If you do not find the answer to your question in the
published guidelines, please consult your legal counsel for
advice. Red Hat will not review requests for permission to use
trademarks or for guidance pertaining to the use of its
trademarks unless it is in the course of a business
relationship. Therefore, Red Hat will not respond to requests
to review such matters, including but not limited to product
packaging, advertising, domain names, marketing materials or
other collateral. If you have a request that is not addressed
here, please consult your legal counsel.</p>
<p>Without waiving any of its rights, Red Hat does not advise
others on the scope of its intellectual property rights. Red
Hat does not permit or consent to any use of its trademarks in
any manner that is likely to cause confusion by implying
association with or sponsorship by Red Hat. If you are aware of
any such use, please contact us at <em>trademarks at redhat dot
com</em>. Consult your legal counsel if you have questions.</p>
<p>If you have trademark questions pertaining to an existing
agreement or other business dealings with Red Hat, please
contact your Red Hat business contact. They will seek advice
from the Red Hat Legal Department as appropriate.</p>

<h1>Fedora Export Control Product Matrix</h1>
<h2>EXPORT COMPLIANCE/CUSTOMS INFORMATION</h2>
<p>
The Fedora Product Matrix and the following information is not
intended to replace the Export Administration Regulations
("EAR"), other U.S. Export laws, or the Harmonized Tariff
Schedule ("HTS"), but is provided as an accommodation to our
partners and customers to be used in conjunction with said
laws to assist you in the export and import of Fedora
products. The exporter is responsible for exporting Fedora
products, in accordance with the requirements of the EAR,
other U.S. Export laws, and the HTS. End-user, end-use and
country of ultimate destination may affect export licensing
requirements. All Export Control Classification Numbers
("ECCN"), HTS Numbers and License Authorization information
are subject to change without notice. Modification in any way
to a Fedora product voids the classification. It is your
obligation as an exporter to verify such information and
comply with the current applicable regulations. IF YOU EXPORT
FEDORA PRODUCTS, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLYING WITH THE
REQUIREMENTS OF THE BUREAU OF INDUSTRY AND SECURITY ("BIS"),
EAR, OR OTHER U.S. EXPORT LAWS.
</p>
<p>
<b>All Export information is provided "As-is". Fedora makes
no warranty or representation that the information contained
on this site is accurate, current, or complete. It is your
obligation as the exporter to comply with the current
applicable requirements of United States export rules and
regulations. Any use of such information by you is without
recourse to Fedora and is at your own risk. Fedora is in no
way responsible for any damages whether direct,
consequential, incidental, or otherwise, suffered by you as
a result of using or relying upon such information for any
purpose.</b> </p>
<h2>Embargoed Destinations</h2>
<p>
Fedora's software and/or technical data may NOT be
exported/reexported, either directly or indirectly, to the
following U.S. embargoed or restricted destinations:</p>
<p>Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan or Syria.</p>
<p>Please note: this list is subject to change.</p>
<h2>Denied Persons/Entities Lists</h2>
<p>
In addition to the Embargoed Destinations, Fedora software
and/or technical data may NOT be exported/reexported, either
directly or indirectly, to a person or entity barred by the
United States Government from participating in export
activities. Denied persons/entities include those persons
and/or entities listed on the Commerce Department's Denied
Persons List, Entities List and to the United States
Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control
("OFAC") Specially Designated Nationals List.

<h1>LICENSE AGREEMENT FEDORA™ TEST RELEASE</h1>
<p>This agreement governs the download, installation or use of
the Software (as defined below) and any updates to the
Software, regardless of the delivery mechanism. The Software
is a collective work under U.S. Copyright Law. Subject to
the following terms, Fedora Project grants to the user
(“User”) a license to this collective work
pursuant to the GNU General Public License. By downloading,
installing or using the Software, User agrees to the terms of
this agreement.</p>
<p><b>1. The Software.</b> Fedora Core (the
“Software”) is a modular Linux operating system
consisting of hundreds of software components. The end user
license agreement for each component is located in the
component's source code. With the exception of certain image
files containing the Fedora trademark identified in Section 2
below, the license terms for the components permit User to
copy, modify, and redistribute the component, in both source
code and binary code forms. This agreement does not limit
User's rights under, or grant User rights that supersede, the
license terms of any particular component. </p>
<p><b>2. Intellectual Property Rights.</b> The Software and
each of its components, including the source code,
documentation, appearance, structure and organization are
copyrighted by Fedora Project and others and are protected
under copyright and other laws. Title to the Software and any
component, or to any copy, modification, or merged portion
shall remain with the aforementioned, subject to the
applicable license. The “Fedora” trademark is a
trademark of Red Hat, Inc. (“Red Hat”) in the
U.S. and other countries and is used by permission. This
agreement permits User to distribute unmodified copies of
Software using the Fedora trademark on the condition that User
follows Red Hat's trademark guidelines located at <a
href="http://fedoraproject.org/legal">http://fedoraproject.org/legal</a>.
User must abide by these trademark guidelines when
distributing the Software, regardless of whether the Software
has been modified. If User modifies the Software, then User
must replace all images containing the “Fedora”
trademark. Those images are found in the anaconda-images and
fedora-logos packages. Merely deleting these files may
corrupt the Software.</p>
<p><b>3. Limited Warranty.</b> Except as specifically stated in
this agreement or a license for a particular component, <b>to
the maximum extent permitted under applicable law, the
Software and the components are provided and licensed
“as is” without warranty of any kind, expressed or
implied, including the implied warranties of merchantability,
non-infringement or fitness for a particular purpose.</b>
Neither the Fedora Project nor Red Hat warrants that the
functions contained in the Software will meet User's
requirements or that the operation of the Software will be
entirely error free or appear precisely as described in the
accompanying documentation. User acknowledges that this
Software is not fully tested and that it, and any
documentation, may contain defects, fail to comply with
specifications, produce unintended or erroneous results.
<b>Use of the Software is at User's own risk.</b></p>
<p><b>4. Limitation of Remedies and Liability. To the maximum
extent permitted by applicable law, Fedora Project and Red Hat
will not be liable to User for any damages, including
incidental or consequential damages, lost profits or lost
savings arising out of the use or inability to use the
Software, even if Fedora Project or Red Hat has been advised
of the possibility of such damages.</b></p>
<p><b>5. Export Control.</b> As required by U.S. law, User
represents and warrants that it: (a) understands that the
Software is subject to export controls under the U.S. Commerce
Department’s Export Administration Regulations
(“EAR”); (b) is not located in a prohibited
destination country under the EAR or U.S. sanctions
regulations (currently Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea,
Sudan and Syria); (c) will not export, re-export, or transfer
the Software to any prohibited destination, entity, or
individual without the necessary export license(s) or
authorizations(s) from the U.S. Government; (d) will not use
or transfer the Software for use in any sensitive nuclear,
chemical or biological weapons, or missile technology end-uses
unless authorized by the U.S. Government by regulation or
specific license; (e) understands and agrees that if it is in
the United States and exports or transfers the Software to
eligible end users, it will, as required by EAR Section
741.17(e), submit semi-annual reports to the Commerce
Department’s Bureau of Industry & Security (BIS), which
include the name and address (including country) of each
transferee; and (f) understands that countries other than the
United States may restrict the import, use, or export of
encryption products and that it shall be solely responsible
for compliance with any such import, use, or export
restrictions.</p>
<p><b>6. General.</b> If any provision of this agreement is
held to be unenforceable, that shall not affect the
enforceability of the remaining provisions. This agreement
shall be governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina
and of the United States, without regard to any conflict of
laws provisions, except that the United Nations Convention on
the International Sale of Goods shall not apply.</p>
