Subject: schedule for translating documentation [draft]
This is mainly for the release notes, but we can follow it for other
documentation for FC5.
2 November - test1 documentation freeze
7 November - test1 release
7 December - test2 documentation freeze
12 December - test2 release
4 January - test3 documentation freeze
9 January - test3 release
1 February - FC5 documentation freeze (final)
13 February - FC5 release
This based on the schedule found at:
http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/
You'll notice that the docs freeze is two days after the devel freeze.
This is really only one additional day for writing beyond devel freeze,
accounting for the dateline. This additional day gives us a chance to
take urgent changes to the release notes right up to devel freeze, and
have one more day to make changes.
Most of the translation will be in test1. We plan to have rolling
content available throughout the writing cycle. Following that, we
don't expect the document to churn very much, perhaps 10% to 20% change
(change, additions) between tests. Expect the changes between test3 and
release to be very minimal.
This schedule is subject to changes in the master schedule.
What do you think? With your agreement, I'll share this with the docs
project as our schedule.
BTW, documents that you may want to translate in addition to the release
notes, which are planned for FC5:
* Installation Guide
* Desktop User Guide
* Managing Software with Yum

Translation Vs. Transliteration
by Sherif Abdelgawad
It was brought to my attention that a lot of the supposed to be arabic
translation in GNOME and KDE is more like transliteration rather than
translation.
To Translate is to render in another language, to put into simpler terms;
explain or interpret.
To Transliterate is o represent (letters or words) in the corresponding
characters of another alphabet.
I know that we are not the same group who is translating the other applications.
I would like at least to point out here it is important to translate and not to
transliterate.
Thanks

route / router
by Mohammad Ghoniem
Salâm,
In order to finish my homework :), I need to get feedback on the
translation of : route and router.
For router, I found موجه.
For route, I found وجهة or طريق.
Do you know any official or better translation for these words ?
Thanks.

I would also like to clarify and stress the point that our confusion, at least
on the Arabic mailing list, is not whether to translate but whether to
transliterate. Some of our members used to transliterate the trademarks and
we have a discussion about it long ago and I have just found my comment on
the subject which is below:

Now, it's the time to hear somethig official from Redhat and to document this
thing on their website. Should we transliterate words like Red Hat, Linux,
GNU, KDE, GNOME, ... or should we write them in English letters among our
native language letters? What about contributors names like "Harald Hoyer" or
"Paul Gampe" when we meet it on our files?
I know RedHat/Fedora advocates "Linux is about choice" and they are not going
to reject the translation that doesn't abide to this rule but there should be
a recommendation. I don't care which choice they choose but I care about
consistency more.
The problem would be more clear when you meet things like
KCalc
KFAX
KMines
OpenOffice.org Writer
You see my point?

Thanks for this tip. Will you please post a link to this list?

السلام عليكم
لاحظت عند بدء تشغيل نسخة فيدورا ٤ رسائل حالة الخدمات التي تشير إلى "موافق"،
"موافق"، موافق"، ... عند كل خدمة. طبعا هذه الترجمة خاطئة ولست متأكدا من أفضل
ترجمة فما هي اقتراحاتكم؟ هل نترجمها "نجاح" أم ماذا؟
أيضا لست متأكدا من مكان هذه الترجمة، هل من معين؟

Why Fedora installs all the world languages on my poor laptop?!
by Munzir Taha
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Salaam,
Today I checked the Arabic locale .mo files by doing locate .mo. I was
astonished to find my poor laptop doesn't only have Arabic and English
languages installed but every language one can dream of. This makes a total
of 332MB on my hard disk. Now I am going to remove them manually which is not
something to be recommeded since it breaks package validation. Any one here
knows why is this? Any solution? Should I tell Sherif to file a bug? ;)
Another point is I am missing the all the Arabic locales files like LC_TIME,
LC_COLLATE, ... and hence I can't display the date in Arabic. There is is
also no ar_xx locales for different Arabic countries - only a standard ar!
May be I am missing something obvious?
