Postgres 8.2 deprecated (was Fwd: [ANNOUNCE] PostgreSQL 2011-09-26 Cumulative Bug-fix Release )
by Heiko W.Rupp
Postgres 8.2 will be deprecated later this year. 9.0 is supported already and I will check for 9.1, so I think
we may recommend new users to go to 9.0* (or if confirmed work to to 9.1).

hibernate detach utility debug
by John Mazzitelli
I added some configurability to the hibernate detach utility logging,
based on some feedback by Ian. This is probably more of interest to Ian
right now, but figured post it here for posterity.
By default, we now only log at DEBUG level the number of objects
detached and the duration it took IF it took longer than 10 seconds.
that's a really long time for this, so we should log that so we have a
record of it. It is DEBUG, so you won't see it unless you turn that
category on.
But if you are testing or have a need to analyze performance, you can
have it log a more detailed message at a certain threshold if you set
the sysprop "rhq.server.hibernate-detach-utility.dump-stack-thresholds"
(you'd probably do this in rhq-server.properties).
You set it to two numbers separated by a ":". For example:
rhq.server.hibernate-detach-utility.dump-stack-thresholds=5000:10000
means a message will be logged at the WARN level IF EITHER:
1) the detach took longer that 5000 milliseconds
OR
2) the number of objects detached was over 10,000
We log the duration, number of objects AND the class of the object being
detached (we can't log the object's toString because that would be very
long, especially for things like large collections of compound objects).
We also log the full stack trace so we know where the object came from.

gwt regex api?
by John Mazzitelli
Well, Heiko - I gave it a shot and just hit the problem I should have
remembered. I am trying to get it where the alert definition page will
allow for units to be specified (your pet peeve).
But the reason why we haven't done it yet is because of this:
00:00:32.800 [ERROR] Line 22: The import java.text cannot be resolved
00:00:32.912 [ERROR] Line 23: The import java.util.regex cannot be resolved
00:00:32.912 [ERROR] Line 39: Pattern cannot be resolved to a type
00:00:32.912 [ERROR] Line 47: Matcher cannot be resolved to a type
00:00:32.912 [ERROR] Line 78: DecimalFormat cannot be resolved
Anyone know if/where there is a good regex/parser API for GWT - out of
box, GWT doesn't support any of the built Java ones.

Generics & Plugins
by Stefan Negrea
Hello Everybody,
I noticed a lot of raw type warnings in RHQ. I think most of them can be fixed pretty easy (without adding SuppressWarnings everywhere).
Here are two specific examples:
1) org.rhq.core.pluginapi.inventory.ResourceComponent.java
- Now
public interface ResourceComponent<T extends ResourceComponent> extends AvailabilityFacet {
- Could be changed to
public interface ResourceComponent<T extends ResourceComponent<?>> extends AvailabilityFacet {
2) org.rhq.core.pluginapi.inventory.ResourceDiscoveryComponent.java
- Now
public interface ResourceDiscoveryComponent<T extends ResourceComponent> {
- Could be changed to
public interface ResourceDiscoveryComponent<T extends ResourceComponent<?>> {
With this change the only problems that come to my mind are related to runtime exceptions from collections that use these classes. I attached a Java file with a few test cases for generics with wildcards . Hopefully I covered most of the RHQ use cases.
The wildcard change looks benign to me. Are there any reasons this was not done? Am I missing some complex edge cases or classloader issues? Or maybe problems with different JVMs?
Thank you,
Stefan Negrea

key and default name for AS7 Server Resources
by Ian Springer
Heiko,
I noticed the jboss home dir (e.g. /opt/jboss-as-7.0.1.Final) is used as
the key and default name for AS7 Server Resources. Is this safe? In
earlier versions of AS, you could run multiple server instances out of
the same home dir, so we used the server config dir
(/opt/jboss-6.0.0.Final/server/config/default) as the key. And for the
default name we used the hostname + port.

Question about top-level directory named "alert-scripts"
by Michael Foley
Hi,
I am inquiring about the purpose of a top-level directory named "alert-scripts". I am curious about its original purpose, and whether the directory is useful to anyone at this time.
There are two files in this directory, as follows:
• README.txt ... with the contents "This directory contains scripts for the scriptlang alert sender. Currently JRuby and JavaScript are supported. "
• example.rb .... which contains a Ruby script.
I think this directory is associated with an experimental Ruby script plugin described at this location: http://www.rhq-project.org/display/RHQ/2009/12/08/New+experimental+%28Rub...
Does anyone utilize this Ruby Script plug-in?
The reason I ask is that there is some discussion around the removal of this directory.
Thanks,
Michael Foley

a few more suggestions for the as7 plugin
by Ian Springer
1) I noticed that datasources are created via an operation on the
datasources singleton Resource, rather than via the usual
create-child-resource mechanism. This is inconsistent with how all of
our other plugins expose child creation.
2) I like the singleton Resources for the various subsystems, because in
addition to grouping similar child services, they provide a place to put
subsystem-wide metrics, operations, and configurations. I'd rename these
to "Foo Subsystem" rather than just "foo" to stress that they are
singletons and represent subsystems (similar to what was done in the
rhq-server plugin).
3) The Resource type names in the plugin have inconsistent formats -
some are CamelCase, others are lowercase-dash-separated, and others are
Separate Capitalized Words. I think they should all be Separate
Capitalized Words, since that's what we use in almost all of our other
plugins.
4) I don't see any JMS/HornetQ related Resources. Are those on the roadmap?

ON_QA when in master only
by John Mazzitelli
move BZs to ON_QA state only when the fix is in master. If in some other
branch, leave in ON_DEV until the merge.
