Dynamic Types
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
a lot of our current functionality assumes that fixed types are already present
in the system via the plugin-descriptor.
Now with the dynamic type work by Alex the game has changed: there is
a ChildTypeDiscoveryFacet that can detect new resource types and ChildTypeDiscovery
classes can find resources of that type and the world is good again :)
But after a pc/agent restart, the type is not know (anymore), but resources of the
type are commited in the server, which leads to situations like this:
2010-10-21 22:25:00,360 DEBUG [InventoryManager.discovery-1] (rhq.core.pc.inventory.InventoryManager)- Merging [Resource[id=10411, type=FooBar, key=nagiosKey@Nr: foo, name=nagiosKey@Nr: foo, parent=Nagios@pickeldi:6557]] into local inventory...
2010-10-21 22:25:00,360 ERROR [InventoryManager.discovery-1] (rhq.core.pc.inventory.InventoryManager)- Unable to merge Resource Resource[id=10411, type=FooBar, key=nagiosKey@Nr: foo, name=nagiosKey@Nr: foo, parent=Nagios@pickeldi:6557] - its type is unknown - perhaps the [NagiosMonitor] plugin jar was manually removed from the Server's rhq-plugins dir?
Is there an (easy) way to reconnect the resources to the type once the type got re-discovered as described above?
Thanks
Heiko

Package deployment doesnt work in rhq 3.0.0 with the h2 demo database
by Adrian Brock
This is a call to
ResourceFactoryManagerLocal.createResource(
Subject subject,
int serverId,
int resourceType,
String name,
Configuration pluginConfig,
String packageName,
String version,
Integer arch,
Configuration config,
InputStream is)
Which used to work on 1.3.1 with the h2 database.
But it fails in 3.0.0 with an unsupported blob operation.
Not a major issue, but h2 is useful for testing since you can easily throw
all the data away and start again. :-)

Re: RHQ initial server startup error: NoClassDefFoundError: org/jboss/wsf/spi/deployment/UnifiedVirtualFile (RHQ_3_0_0_EmbJopr2 tag)
by Andreas Dietrich
I actually worked in the release-3.0.0 branch. We are using the
official Version of RHQ right now (tagged RHQ_3_0_0) and wanted to
upgrade.
I did not want to take some SNAPSHOT version so I took the
RHQ_3_0_0_EmbJopr2 tag (which is an descendant of the last officially
tagged RHQ_3_0_0_GA version).
So I cannot expect the EmbJopr releases will fit into the upgrade process?
My guess was that the DB updates are in a way community-supported like this?:
RHQ_3_0_0 => RHQ_3_0_0_GA => RHQ_EmbJopr => RHQ_EmbJopr2 => RHQ_3_0_1 => ...
I just retried the deployment with the RHQ_3_0_0_GA version and get
the same error. Maybe the automatically downloaded JBoss installation
has some errors (related to the Maven build process?).
I will retry with the RHQ_3_0_0 version and if this does not help
setup a new Maven repository and start from scratch.
Another question related to this one and maybe more general is:
Currently I see two branches "release-3.0.0-patch1" and
"release-3.0.0-patch2" but they are not tagged.
So I guess I can't consider the latest revisions in the patch branches
as "community-supported to work for patches" (at least till they are
untagged) right?
I mean do I get in a "Beta-" state (especially related to the DB) if I
would upgrade to those revisions?
If you should not know what I mean I'll explain with an example:
Let's assume:
Rev (ordered) | tag | branch | description
rev1 rhq3 rhq3 official version
rev3 <none> rhq3 some untagged version not contained in
rhq3.1
rev6 <none> rhq3.1 some untagged patch branch revision
rev9 rhq3.0.1 rhq3.1 officially tagged patch version
If I upgrade my RHQ installation based on rev1 to rev9 everything
should be fine. If there are bugs found in rev9 I will wait for some
official update and my DB will not be corrupted or at least be
repaired later.
Is it correct that if I would upgrade based on rev1 to rev6 or even
rev3 I cannot expect a later upgrade to rev9 to work at all?
Thanks
Andreas :-)

I'm not seeing anything RHQ specific that is failing here. However, can
I ask what you are trying to do? Are you trying to build an RHQ Server
distribution or an Embedded Jopr distribution? If the former, I think
you are using the wrong tagged version. That "EmpJopr2" tag name infers
that it was needed to build the Embedded Jopr stuff - I would not use
that - instead, use the "release-3.0.0" branch or something like that. See:
http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/re...
If you want to build/run Embedded Jopr, I'm actually not too familiar
with how to build that. Hopefully Ian is around that can help or point
to a wiki page that explains the Embedded Jopr build process.

InventoryManager change?
by Michael Neale
Hi all.
On suggestion of heiko - I am posting here about a possible patch to
InventoryManager - but not sure if it is a good idea.
Adrian Brock and I have been using RHQ - lots of deployments/undeployments
etc..:
If you deploy UserDS-ds.xml then delete it (undeploy it).
Then try to redeploy it, the inventory status stays at "DELETED" rather
than
going back to "COMMITTED".
Running a full, manual, detailed discovery on the platform will fix the
problem. So that
might have to be our be our workaround until we can get a fix?
I think Ive tracked the problem down to the InventoryManager, it is
basically missing
setting the inventory status when it already has the resource, but it is not
in the state COMMITTED.
public Resource mergeResourceFromDiscovery(Resource resource, Resource
parent) throws PluginContainerException {
// If the Resource is already in inventory, make sure its version is
up-to-date, then simply return the
// existing Resource.
Resource existingResource = findMatchingChildResource(resource,
parent);
if (existingResource != null) {
updateResourceVersion(existingResource, resource.getVersion());
+ // proposed fix - make sure merged resources go back to committed
+ existingResource.setInventoryStatus(InventoryStatus.COMMITTED);
return existingResource;
}
// Auto-generate id and auto-commit if embedded within JBossAS.
if (!this.configuration.isInsideAgent()) {
resource.setId(this.temporaryKeyIndex.decrementAndGet());
resource.setInventoryStatus(InventoryStatus.COMMITTED);
This matches what used to be done in the old
ResourceFactoryManagerBean.createInventoryResource()
until that code was orphaned.
Does this make sense at all?

can't get ha failover to work
by Bala Nair
We're trying to set up an rhq HA cloud with 2 servers and 4 agents and
we're having a problem getting the agents to failover to the second
server. When we first start up everything all the agents are connected
to one server (call it server A) with the other server (server B) not
connected to any agents. The failover list on the agent side showing 2
entries (server B and server A in that order). We go to the HA servers
page in the gui and see both servers are in NORMAL mode with server A
having an agent count of 4 and server B a count of 0. There are no
affinity groups. We then set server A to MAINTENANCE mode and wait. I
expect the 4 agents connected to server A to failover to server B and to
see that in the servers list, but nothing changes. Checking the agent
logs I find the following errors:
2010-10-15 11:17:46,653 INFO [RHQ Server Polling Thread]

In this case mmc-int is server A. I can understand the second series of
errors where it tries to fail back to mmc-int and fails because mmc-int
is in maintenance mode. I don't understand the initial failure though.
First why is it trying to fail over to localhost instead of server B and
second why the connection refused error? There is no rhq server on this
agent box to refuse a connection.
I have looked through all the agent and server configuration properties
and I just don't see how the localhost address is getting set in this
case. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

adminstration>templates gwt replacement
by John Mazzitelli
Sending this out to solicit comments/suggestions.
Today we have an old .jsp page that you use to peruse the resource types
in the system with the option to click a button to get to the page that
lets you add alert templates or metric templates (see attached jsp.png).
I am working on the alert template page stuff. But before a user can see
it they have to click something to get there. I need to therefore start
the gwt page for this "administration>templates" page (probably need to
rename that page now).
Today we have the start of some resource type tree - see attached gwt.png.
What's a good way to continue on that gwt page to get to what we need as
a replacement for that jsp page?
Is there a better way to do this entirely - what other UI ideas are there?

RHQ initial server startup error: NoClassDefFoundError: org/jboss/wsf/spi/deployment/UnifiedVirtualFile (RHQ_3_0_0_EmbJopr2 tag)
by Andreas Dietrich
Hi,
can somebody give me a hint why I get this error trying to startup the
RHQ server (RHQ_3_0_0_EmbJopr2 tagged revision).
I built it in Eclipse Helios using an external Maven 2.2.1 install.
Thanks for any hint
Andreas :-)

The session id for user [admin] is invalid
by Heiko W.Rupp
When running my (long running) performance tests, I get from time to time the following exception:
Those affected tests run for > 300sec - do we have some new more aggressive session timeout somewhere?
And how can this be disabled for long running tests?
Thanks
Heiko
